  • Is Christianity the only thing "strong" enough to start the next U.S. civil war?

I think the only way we will start killing each other again, will be because of Christianity trying to take over this nation as its own. If Christians really believe that this is god's nation--or a christian nation-- then us non-Christians have no place in it.

It scares me, but it isn't that farfetched.

    MATTHEW 10:

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

  • As a western monotheist, how do you accept that all other beliefs are wrong, while yours is right?

How do you accept that your scriptures are right, while the others are wrong? How can you accept that you will ascend to the place of the chosen, while all other religious people who don't do as you do will fall into the place of the unchosen?

If you are right, everybody else is wrong, and they will suffer.

If you think everybody is right, then what is the point of keeping to your doctrine?

Who is right? What is the truth?

  • I can understand the people trying to argue god because of origin, but..?

Seriously, I get the whole origin argument, which can be summed up as follows:

-You don't know how live/existence/the universe started or is possible.

-You assume that humans have the ability to know these things.

-You apply some random physics law and then say, "see, it must have been god." (because we don't know). Instead of the appropriate, "We don't know, and may never know, but we will continue to investigate."

OK, I get that, it has flaws, but I understand wanting to understand it all, and thinking that you do when you have been taught incorrectly.

But what is up with the people who actually believe a god interacts with the world on a regular basis? Especially those people who insist that god has entered THEIR lives and changed it. Do they not realize that they are just giving credit where credit is not due? Do they not realize that they are just convincing themselves of what they wish were true? Are they just partially crazy?

    Seriously, I don't get it.

  • Should I have given my sister the money?

Hello, I can imagine my trying to type this out and it being incredibly long so I will try to make it short and to the point by using bullet points.

-I am a 25 year old just getting my career started. I've been working professionally for about 4 years and I make pretty good money, and have a bit saved up (hoping to get a home in the coming years).

-I am the 2nd youngest in a big disfunctional family of 8 kids and divorced parents. There is alot of conflict.

-Growing up I was only close to my brothers, didn't talk much to my sisters until I was older.

-I have a sister who is 2 years older than me, who got pregnant when she was 16, had the baby, never went to college.

--she went through a 9 month training program for a ~$15/hour job and started working, but was fired from like 5 different jobs.

--she accidentally mixed her (anxiety) medications wrong 3 years ago and cut her wrists in the bathroom while her daughter was home. [She still to this day claims this never happened]

--after the suicide incident, she cut half of the family out of her life, and refuses to talk to them.

--she purchased a house..but right now it is abandoned and I assume just hanging in debt.

--she has not worked for about 4 years.

--she had a boyfriend for the past 4 years who has been supporting her (he is not the father).

--a month ago she found out her boyfriend was cheating, so they broke up. She had to leave the place she was renting with him, move in with a friend, and now she has nothing (as a result of not working for years).

--In the past 4 years, I have probably seen her less than 8 times, and spoken to her less than 20.

    --she smokes.

So last week she contacted me asking for money. She specifically said "gift, not a loan." I have been called by most of my friends as the most frugal person they know who is best with money. For example, I save about 70% of my paycheck and live well below my means. I don't look at money as currency, I look at it as hard work, security, and my future. When my sister asked me for money, I told her that I don't believe in lending money to people, but if she had a small emergency, I could give something small. She failed to label anything specific and was pissed and kept saying how nobody cares about her and how everybody is so horribly detatched.

Basically, I don't personally believe in being the bank or salvation for another person who failed to make good enough life choices to support themself (and I just find it so incredibly unintelligent of her to put herself in a situation where she was literally living off of her boyfriend who is not even the father of her child). I am willing to give my time to those in need, but not my money.

She has not talked to me since I refused, and I do feel bad for her, but I don't regret my decision.

Would you have lended the money?

  • Please explain these Bible verses to me. Why don't Christians follow these? Are there no True Believers?

    Taken from: http://www.evilbible.com/BiblicalIntolerance.htm

    ---

We shall start with the two verses that helped to inflict one of the biggest mass murders in history, the Inquisition.

-Woman with “familiar spirits” must be stoned to death. Leviticus 20:27

-“Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” Exodus 22:18

********Kill those who are not Christian or Jewish:

-You must kill those who worship another god. Exodus 22:20

-Kill any friends or family that worship a god that is different than your own. Deuteronomy 13:6-10

-Kill all the inhabitants of any city where you find people that worship differently than you. Deuteronomy 13:12-16

-Kill everyone who has religious views that are different than your own. Deuteronomy 17:2-7

-Kill anyone who refuses to listen to a priest. Deuteronomy 17:12-13

-Kill any false prophets. Deuteronomy 18:20

-Any city that doesn’t receive the followers of Jesus will be destroyed in a manner even more savage than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Mark 6:11

-Jude reminds us that God destroys those who don’t believe in him. Jude 5

*********Ignorance is bliss. Christians should not practice free inquiry nor socialize with non Christians:

-Don’t associate with non-Christians. Don’t receive them into your house or even exchange greeting with them. 2 John 1:10

-Shun those who disagree with your religious views. Romans 16:17

-Paul, knowing that their faith would crumble if subjected to free and critical inquiry, tells his followers to avoid philosophy. Colossians 2:8

**********Judge other religions for not following Christ:

-Whoever denies “that Jesus is the Christ” is a liar and an anti-Christ. 1 John 2:22

-Christians are “of God;” everyone else is wicked. 1 John 5:19

    -The non-Christian is “a deceiver and an anti-Christ” 2 John 1:7

-Anyone who doesn’t share Paul’s beliefs has “an evil heart.” Hebrews 3:12

-False Jews are members of “the synagogue of Satan.” Revelations 2:9, 3:9

  • Is this one of the funniest things about Christianity?

If a person appeared who was truly able to talk to "god", and was trying to a divine mandate, such as killing all nonbelievers, or outlawing shellfish consumption, such a person would be considered CRAZY by almost every so called Christian. Even if this person really was the messenger of god, god's message would likely be out of line with our own morals and senses (in the US) that all would think this person was a nutjob.

So much for the bible getting any new chapters. We're too advanced as a society to buy into any more of that bull, yet we're too scared and indoctrinated to let go of the lies that were told to our ancestors.

    it's quite funny.

  • Christians, what is "evil"?

Please describe evil to help me understand.

    What makes a person evil?

    What makes an action evil?

    What makes a place evil?

    What makes an idea evil?

    What is evil?

If a person is evil once, will they ever be good?

  • I have a coworker with this religious sign at his desk?

It says, "A man who walks with god will find success."

Would it be appropriate for me to put up a sign reading what my beliefs are:

"Since there is no god to help me, I must work hard and learn to communicate well in order to be successful. I have faith in myself."

Why or why not? Is there a double standard here?

    :)

  • Why do we precede the names of religious texts with the word "THE"?

For instance, you would say "Over the weekend, I spent most of my time reading 50 Shades of Grey." Instead of "THE 50 Shades of Grey".

So why do we say, "He read THE bible", or "THE Torah", or "THE Quran" Instead of addressing them like every other book? e.g., "I saw some Christian reading Holy Bible the other day."

    You get my drift?

  • Why does criticism offend Christians?

(pointing out Christians, because I don't have experience of others complaining).

But here is the situation. You think I'm wrong, and I think you are wrong. OK? So, if I'm not offended because you think I'm wrong...why are you offended because I think you are wrong?

Why is it okay to tell somebody, that "god exists and loves you"? But it is offensive to say, "god doesn't exist, therefore he does not love me, you, or anybody"? Either way, you are asserting something that you can't prove. Why is one acceptable, but one is not to many Christians?

Note: I know most atheists don't actually say "god does not exist", so please don't waste the space with that complaint.

  • If the bible was taken seriously or closer to literally, would it produce serial killers?

Are there passages in the bible that tell followers to kill others for minor behaviors or actions? If so, please quote and reference them.

Also, if any passages are quoted, Christians, why don't you follow these passages as the word of god?

  • How many gnostic atheists out there?

Most atheists are agnostic atheists, or say they don't know that there is or is no god. Which is fair, I understand that it is unfalsifiable. Personally, as a gnostic atheist, I think "knowledge" is subjective. So I feel I know that no god exists, just as much as I know that when an apple falls from a tree (assuming no wind or weird magnetism), that apple will fall towards the ground, not fly up into the air.

So how many atheists would make this bet?: "I bet my life that god does not exist."

Personally, I would. I doubt many others would, but thought I would ask.

(suspend your belief and assume there was an objective source of knoweldge that could actually definitely answer this bet..yes I know the concept is ridiculous, but otherwise this wouldn't matter).

  • Does it actually say anywhere in the Bible that god has a plan for everybody?

Just curious as I see that claim alot from Christians. Please tell me the verse.

Is there any way to revert to how it was before (yesterday for me)? I just want to be able to easily see the answers that I've already done (with their actual titles so I can tell which is which).

  • Which one of these is the biggest reason for religion?

    The fear of death?

    Or

The desire for humanity to be "special", above all other animals? Also the desired to be personally OBJECTIVELY special?

I think the fear of death is most of the driving force (e.g. souls and reincarnation), but that "I want to be special" mentality plays a big factor when people are being sold a religion (e.g. "I'm crafted in god's image (thus I am objectively greater than all other creatures), god loves me, and I'm going to heaven!").

    What do you think?

  • How can I believe in Christianity when...?

When it sounds completely unbelievable, fantastic, and fictitious to me?

Honestly, the question here is, how can you believe, when you can't believe? Take a person who does not believe in ghosts. How can a believer in ghosts convince another that ghosts do in-fact occupy our world?

The point I'm making is that belief is not as much of a decision as it is a compulsion. I don't decide what to believe, I believe what I rationalize as true or believable. If I can't rationalize Christianity as true or believable, why is it my sin? I am UNABLE to believe in something that doesn't have any method of showing that there is fact or truth in what it is.

Do you Christans understand that I can't choose to believe? I can fake it, yes. But believe it? No, not until I'm convinced there is a reason to.

And if you do, why are you conversing with us atheists?
