Currently have two Whippet dogs a Belgian Malinois puppy, a Bengal cat and a British Shorthair and a Tonkinese mix. I am a fan of alternate veterinary therapies when they are available. I've worked in shelters and fostered close to 100 dogs and probably over 100 cats over the years. I have a soft spot for Dobermans, sighthounds and shepherds.

  • Has anyone seen a cat with eyes like this?

Have you ever seen or do you know what it's called when a cat's pupil look like it is set high in the eye? One person I knew called them moon eyes.

In the picture with two cats, she is the one in the back, it was taken today. The one of just her was taken in about 2001 or 2002. Her eyes have been like that as long as I've known her and her vision seems fine she just usually looks mad because of how her eyes are.

  • What is the largest dog a coyote could kill and what type of fence?

We recently moved into our current house, this morning I watched a coyote walk through the yard. We don't have a fence but will be installing one soon and were also going to install a doggie door. The coyote was about the same size as my dogs so I'm not too worried about them, but I know one killed a pomeranian mix that was in the neighbors fenced yard when they let it out one evening to go to the bathroom before bed. Knowing there are coyotes in the area, what type of fence is recommended and how high. Also, what is the biggest dog you think a single coyote could kill and would it

  • How to get a dog used to eating once a day?

I have a 2 year old whippet who seems to need to eat twice a day. If she goes more than about 15 hours she starts throwing up. It's just a small amount of foam. It doesn't matter how large her previous meal was or what she ate, have fed kibble and raw in the past. I think it might just be a behavioral thing as in her body is used to eating and says, "Hey, where's my food!" How can I retrain her so that I can feed her main meal only once per day? My other whippet doesn't have any problem eating once per day. Thanks

  • What US hotel chains would you recommend for dogs?

I am moving next week and my critters (2 cats, 2 dogs) are all coming with me. We will need a place in New Mexico and a place or two in California. Where do you stay with your pets? We are just needing overnight accommodations, so the places don't need to be too fancy. Largest dog is 35lbs. Where would you recommend we stay or stay away from?

  • Building confidence in a dog?

I am looking for additional ideas on building confidence in my whippet. He was previously a show dog and very confident, he was later attacked by another dog and had part of one ear ripped off and mild damage to the other. After all of this he still gets along great with other dogs, his problem now is people. Since his accident, he gets along well with some people but is scared of others. I have only had him a few weeks but he gets along great with me and my husband. I currently live with a family, they have two kids, 2 and 3(almost 4). He avoids the two adults and will often avoid the kids. If I am upstairs with the dogs, and one of the kids come upstairs sometimes he will growl, not aggressively, more scared as he is more prone to going into flight mode. He will also bark sometimes. He will not go towards them in anyway while he is doing this. He also wants nothing to do with the woman who is 8 months pregnant.

I have been taking him with me to stores and allowing him to be around new people but with me right there and he is getting better. I have had the 3 year old feed the dogs treats and he seems to be warming up to her (he is very food motivated). Sometimes he is ok with the 2 year old, but last night I had him feeding the dogs treats and he would not go anywhere near the treats, but his mom was also near by. I think he might be most afraid of her.

I am looking for additional suggestions to help socialize him and build his confidence.

    Additional info:

I know he has never been abused by a person

He is never left alone with the kids

I am moving in a few weeks and not having any kids so it will not be a long term issue, I just want to help him with confidence around new people and kids in general.

I know this will take time, just trying to get ideas from other people's experience

I have another whippet and she is very outgoing and lets the kids or anyone hang all over her, seems to enjoy it

He is a perfect dog otherwise
