  • Ethical question: government employee misusing their position for personal reasons.?

I am a solicitor for a government organisation. I have only been there for 10 weeks. Recently a disgruntled employee told me she is only staying at the organisation to suit her personal interests.

She too is a solicitor. She advised me that she is unhappy at her job and remains there only because the organisation is expanding the workplace benefits of paid time off, and flexible returning-to-work hours for those who become pregnant. These changes are due to take place in December at which time she intends to become pregnant (alone and without a partner, if that's at all relevant, which I guess it is not) to utilise the paid maternity leave for an extended period of time. Once she is ready to return to work, she plans on utilising the graduated-return-to-work policy after which time, when it suits, she will leave and seek employment elsewhere. To quote her she said "I am staying here to buy a child" ie use her income and benefits to take care of her maternity leave needs etc.

Whilst I find this attitude distasteful, to say the least, I am uncertain as to what, if anything, I should do. If I tell her manager, all I am doing is advising them of her intention to utilise the benefits afforded to anyone who becomes pregnant or starts a family. This should be available to all employees, but this is a downright abuse of those benefits. If I did advise management, they would seek to find a reason to terminate her employment.

  • My son is in a bad relationship. I'm either worried or guilty or both. Advice please. Cannot shake the unease.?

My son is 24 with a 22 year old girlfriend. Born of an angry father, who was physically abusive (called it discipline) from the age of 1 to 8. At age 8 my son and I left. I didn't get him out of there soon enough. By then he was already angry though loving. I rarely feel or show anger, but I fell into a depression post end of marriage. My son was so alone. He's in a relationship with a girl who is very literally "sweet" but she is clingy, (rages if he spends any time away from her, and they spend all but every other free minute together, turns into an unexpected rage from laughter if son is eg. play fighting her, rings him btw 7-10 times per day though he begs her not to, she spends money like there's no tomorrow, & needs to borrow from him each week to compensate - he saves - for eventual home).

It doesn't sound like much but they have been ultra serious for five years now and she, in particular, has often talked marriage, (she is an utter darling but frustrating in the extreme). They fight feverishly and constantly, often in my presence, and it's only getting worse. I AM over-involved here. Can't bear to see either of them unhappy. Anything I can do?

He asks for my advice at times, as does she. I feel sick at the thought that he will try to put a band aid on this by "moving in together" (something they've both suggested as a cure-all for the pain). I'm over-involved here, don't know what,

  • How to change from a lawyer to a manager.?

I am a fairly senior lawyer. I have just joined a government agency as in house counsel. It's good work but the office itself is run very poorly. The systems they use for inputting data seem obsolete and are incredibly labour intensive.

The office needs leadership and stability - (they've lost many staff members over the past 18 months). My role is prosecuting their matters in court. But I would really like to see if I could change things in an administrative sense, particularly to improve efficiency.

I have never been interested in promotion to the legal/administrative arena until now.

Problem, it's not my place to attempt to change anything (I've raised some small issued and the managers are a little jaded and just want to stick to what they are accustomed to)

But the main problem is that I have precisely zero experience in "business management" and so forth.

I would be grateful to hear any suggestions you might have.

  • IS PLAYSTER A SCAM? I have not used "playster" and have just found a financial deduction from them from my bank account.?

I have tried googling them to find a contact number so I may call them but there seems to be limited information - especially finding a number I can call from Australia. Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • I must be the only broke lawyer in Melbourne: I have 11 years experience as a criminal prosecutor.?

I have just applied for the job of my dreams. But because I have been out of the game for 8 years due to a back injury (now fixed by successful surgery), I'm finding it SO difficult to get hired at 49. Any tips? My application on this one is already in, but what I really wanted to tell them was that they were the place where I REALLY wanted to work. But couldn't say that without sounding like a douche. Should I need to apply elsewhere, any tips??? Got to get back to work. Finding life at home alone damn depressing.

  • I have a painful condition and I need answers regarding medication.?

My doctor prescribed tramadol. I only use it intermittently, ie once per week, if that? Sometimes it works really well and others it does absolutely nothing. Can anyone explain this??

  • HELP NEEDED WITH APPLICATION FOR JOB OF MY DREAMS: I am applying for a position with a government anti-corruption agency.?

I was a criminal prosecutor for 11 years but was forced to retire 8 years ago due to a back injury which is now non-existent due to life altering surgery.

An opening has arisen with my dream job. The difficulty is that I need to provide examples of my work relevant to the key selection criteria and my memory is sketchy at best.

One of the questions is: How would you demonstrate our values (integrity, fairness, respect, professionalism) in your day to day work at our organisation. I have quite a few ideas, but they seem so obvious and mundane I'm wondering if anyone has a more creative approach to answering this question. ANY advice would be appreciated.

  • Advice required regarding the efficacy of painkiller.?

I have a painful medical condition. And whilst I refrain from taking pain meds as much as possible, when I DO have to take them, sometimes they don t work AT ALL. Whilst other times they work really well. It s not "tolerance" because I can go weeks without needing any help. But this morning I was in severe pain and took two tramadol (which usually works well) to no avail. I d eaten an hour prior. What is going on?

  • I was a criminal lawyer for 11 years until a back injury forced me to retire. Via surgery my back is healed and I am seeking employment:?

My dream job has just been advertised and I am in the throes of applying for it. The position requires me to address key selection criteria in a very particular way- with an emphasis on outlining examples of my work and performance relevant to their questions. My problem is that after being in retirement for 8 years, I have very limited memory of for instance, legal advices I drafted (though I did many) in my career. Given I was a prosecutor, I worked in a government agency and cannot access the files and documents I worked on. I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL TO HEAR ANY ADVICE AS TO HOW I MIGHT ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.

  • Tony Abbott: his position on gay marriage. What do you think?

Are people satisfied that Tony Abbott's re-statement of the legal definition of marriage is a sound argument against legalising gay marriage?

  • Police brutality in the U.S- Where is the world outcry?

I'm an Australian and have seen so much footage of police brutality in the U.S. After Rodney King there was an outcry against the police officers involved around the world. Today, most of my friends don't even know about what is happening in the U.S. And those who do, are barely moved by it. I'm outraged at the lack of outrage in the world, including Australia. Are we getting de-sensitised to these violent acts? or is there another reason?
