  • Christians - how many gods are there?

Is there one god and Jesus and god are different manifestations of the same supreme being?

Is Jesus the "son" of god and a separate individual and god in his own right? (there are 2 gods)

God the father, Jesus the son, and the Holy Spirit are all separate gods (3 gods)

Whatever the answer is, why can't you-all agree on it?

  • If Obama is the anti-christ...?

Then shouldn't every christian be obligated to vote for him in order to hasten the return of jesus and bring on the rapture?

I suggest if you are a christian and you believe this b.s. about Obama - it is your responsibility to follow gods will and bring on the end of days by voting for him!

  • My Passport Expires in August 2012, should I bother with renewing it?

more specifically, when the end comes in 2012 and I am not raptured into heaven, will the remaining nations still require passports, or will it all be one world order and you just need the mark of the beast to get around.

It costs about $80 to renew it, so I'd like to save some money if possible.

    Thanks

  • Double Dare?

Very enlightening radio interview today on the NPR show Fresh Air with a former christian.

Christians and atheists test your beliefs and get educated.

    http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?...

Religious studies professor Bart D. Ehrman joins Fresh Air to discuss human suffering as it is addressed in the Bible. If there is an all-powerful and loving God, he asks, why do human beings suffer?

    What do you think?

  • Why can't Christians agree on the most fundamental aspect of their doctrine?

I am talking about the trinity issue.

Is there one god, or are there many?

I've already seen all the bible references supporting BOTH arguments.

I am NOT asking for your opinion on which is correct - because each camp (or variation thereof) has it's apologists and adherents that KNOW FOR CERTAIN they are correct.

What I do find fascinating is that they cannot agree on this MOST FUNDAMENTAL part of THEIR doctrine.

Seems' kinda strange that the alpha-omega, creator of everything wasn't a little more clear on this point.

Maybe if you had one - clear - doctrinal view it would provide a significant part of the "evidence" us atheists keep saying is lacking (of course there's still the contradictions and errors in the bible, but that's another matter).

I am just curious on why there is not ONE clear doctrine on such a fundamental point.

Again, don't sell me on your view, explain the disparity.

    Thanks

  • Do you like this Thomas Jefferson quote?

Shake off all fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God, because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.

  • If god is omnipotent then...?

If god already knows who is going to make the right choices and get to heaven to hang out with him forever, why did he bother with any of this actual existence thing?

Seriously, why did he just run the “program” in his head and only create the “winners” of the go-to-heaven lottery.

For the folks that go to heaven he can share the program with them, giving them the actual memories of their lives – they don’t even need to actually “really” do any of it, just implant their life as memories, they end up in heaven complete and perfect before the lord, while none of us heathens have to actually be alive or suffer forever in a lake of fire for making the wrong choices (that he knew in advance we would make)

God get’s his worshipers and no one is harmed in the making of the film (so to speak).

This may at first blush seem silly, but it actually makes a lot more sense than the story as it is commonly told.

I’m still not really sure why god needs all these people worshiping him (is it an ego thing), but he would get his way and he would be much more benevolent in his quest for love.

  • Historical Jesus - SECOND TRY?

Are there any FIRST HAND accounts of the existence of Jesus Christ?

Before you just blast off a bunch of scripture, or tell me about Josephus - READ and UNDERSTAND the question.

Is there ANY FIRST HAND historical evidence of Jesus?

Again, please don't say it's in the bible or tell me about Josephus, because that's not the case, even according to christian biblical authorities (if I am wrong about this provide reference).

The earliest parts of the new testament were written around 40 years after jesus's death and not by the original apostles and Josephus was born after the crucification (assuming it happened at all)

Is there FIRST HAND historical evidence of his existence, please provide a reference for me.

This is a simple yes/no question (if yes, please give me your evidence/reference)

YOUR ANSWER should start with YES, then provide references, if you believe this is the case... YES (got it?)

    Thanks

  • Ex-Atheist Quote?

This is from a an answer to another question from Ex-Atheist (looks like he deleted his answer)

    The Quote:

Only in a universe governed by God can universal, immaterial, unchanging laws exist. Only in a universe governed by God can rational thinking be possible. We use rational thinking to prove things.

Where do these ideas come from, specifically "Only in a universe governed by God can universal, immaterial, unchanging laws exist"

This is pure non-sense isn't it, or am I missing something.

Please explain so I can understand this world view better.

And how many ex-atheists are there? I am an ex-christian, but haven't heard of many ex-atheists (a few)

  • Historical Jesus?

I have read the lists of ancient historians that haven mentioned jesus in passing or second hand, but here is my simple question.

Is there ANY FIRST HAND historical evidence of Jesus?

Please don't say it's the bible, because that's not true even according to christian biblical authorities (if I am wrong about this provide reference). The earliest parts of the new testament were written around 40 years after jesus's death and not by the original apostles.

Is there FIRST HAND historical evidence of his existence, please provide a reference for me.

This is a simple yes/no question (if yes, please give me your evidence/reference)

  • Great quotes, what do you think?

‘An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An Atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An Atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanquished, war eliminated. He wants man to understand and love man.’

‘I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.’ - Steven Roberts

‘And if there were a God, I think it very unlikely that He would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence.’ - Bertrand Russell

‘Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned.’

‘We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes.’ - Gene Roddenberry

  • Is this question the epitomy of ignorance?

I honestly cannot fathom the ignorance displayed by this questioner.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As67G...

I have always given people the benefit of doubt. I believe people can raise to great heights if only given the chance.

Read the questioners comments, is this complete ignorance, or blind faith in it's most exposed naked form.

The most remarkable part of this, to me, is he thinks he has "proven" some kind of great point - but he is so utterly clueless that it's embarrassing.

  • Is the Bible inspired?

From a christian answer to a question:

"The doctrine of the inspiration of the Bible means that the Bible in the original documents is God-breathed, that it is a divine product, and, because it is divine, the original documents are inerrant. The copies of those documents are not inspired. We have copies of inspired documents." ..."the Scriptures are still God-breathed and necessarily inerrant."

The person then proceeds to list scripture, after scripture, after scripture that says the bible is true accurate and inspired.

Is the complete and utter fundamental lack or credibility and logic really lost on christians when they use self references to validate and justify the divinity of these texts.

It really boils down to "the bible is true, because the bible says it's true" logic - WHICH MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER

Is this silliness lost on them. (rhetorical question)

  • Cut off by a fish?

I had someone cut me off yesterday on the freeway who had a jesus fish on their car.

Does this mean all christians are bad drivers?

I ask because I am told by the christians on this site that all of us atheists are evil and going to suffer for eternity in hell. Also that we all secretly really believe in god, but choose to deny him. And that I am misinformed and that my atheism is actually a religion. So do these categorical generalization apply across the board and go both ways?

Also, will this driver, who was clearly in the wrong and quite rude, at least get a "talkin to" by jesus when he gets to heaven? (which could be pretty soon, they way he was drivin')

    Thanks

  • How to baptize?

There are two formulas for baptism found in the New Testament.

Jesus is quoted as commanding us to baptize "in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:19).

But this formula is used nowhere else in scripture.

Acts often mentions baptism, but consistently states that the apostles baptized "in the Name of Jesus Christ" (e.g. Acts 2:38 & 10:48)

    Well which is it?

And if Jesus says "in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" what implications does this have on the trinity notion. Are these three seperate gods, (are they equal or do they have rank?) or is jesus/god/the holy spirit the manifestations of one god.

I know none of you Christians can agree on this point, but it is prettying interesting and a fairly important doctrinal concept (apparently without resolution from the bible).
