  • How to find the minimum of a quadratic equation?

I'm trying to help my niece with her homework, and I'm getting very frustrated, because I forgot how to find the minimum of an equation. If someone can just help remind me how to do it, I would appreciate it!

The specific problem she's working on is

    9x^2-60x+80=0

    Thanks!

  • APA website citation without an author?

How do you cite a website when there is no author? Here is the site I'm trying to cite.

    http://iirc.niu.edu/School.aspx?source=School_Prof...

I can't find an author on it, so I'm not sure how to do that. I can only find resources that say how to cite it when there is an author. Thanks!

  • Which type of error is this?

I'm working on a study guide for a course on research methods, etc., and on one section I have to match the scenario with the cause, or type of error.

The error types to choose from are: Random error, Significance Level, Systematic Error, Type I Error, and Type II error.

I figured out most of them, but I can't figure out the last two:

    1. An innocent person if found guilty

    2. A guilty person is found innocent

    thanks!

  • Is it ok to use butter after the expiration date?

I was just going to bake a cake, and I noticed the date on my butter was about two weeks ago. It's been refrigerated since it was purchased, and the package is still sealed closed.

    Thanks.

  • Looking for opinions of parents of 5th-8th graders?

Hi. I am conducting a research study for my final project in my graduate school program. I would like to get some students' opinions on how they learn math in middle school grades. I have a brief, 10 question survey that I would like for you to answer with your child. It's basically about how your child prefers to learn, and what you as a parent feel about it. If you would be interested in helping me, please respond here, or email me at chelle42978@gmail.com

I need as many responses as I can to find out exactly what children would like to learn!

    Thank you for your help!

  • Final Research Project in Math Ed. 6-8th grade?

I have already chosen my topic for my project, and have begun my research. However, I am currently not a teacher and don't have easy access to a classroom to conduct my research study in. I was wondering if anyone else has been in my shoes and how to go about locating a classroom to work with. I live in Chicago, and was thinking about just visiting some of my neighborhood schools, but I was not sure if there was any other way to go about doing this. Thank you for any help!

  • High School Homeschooling in Chicago?

I am thinking about homeschooling my niece when she starts high school in the fall. We live in Chicago, and I don't feel comfortable sending her to the public schools that are available to her. If there is anyone who home schools their high school age children, or any students that are home schooled for high school in IL, please let me know if there are any virtual school programs you use, or how you go about starting. Actually, any advice or information would be great! Thanks a lot!

  • Does the Rockband set for Wii take up a lot of room?

I know that's probably a silly question, but my daughter and I have a small apartment, but she really wants the Beatles set for Christmas. I know how big the guitars are, obviously, and the microphone, but do the drums take up a lot of room? I wasn't sure if you can fold them up or something like that when they're not being used. Thanks a lot!

  • The square root of 9x^2+25?

I know you can factor 9x^2+25 to be (3x+5)(3x-5). But how do I get the square root of this problem? Thanks for any help! :)

  • Prerequisite skills for teaching Middle School Math topics?

I'm studying for an exam, and I need help with this question! It was on a pretest, so I'm not sure if I got the answers right or wrong, just that my percentage was not as high as it should be. There were actually three questions that referred to this, so I'll ask all three, give the choices, and my answers. Any tips for improvement would be appreciated greatly! (*=answers I chose)

    1. What prerequisite skills would a teacher review in order for a student to solve a problem using the Pythagorean Theorem? (multiplication properties, division properties, triangular numbers, *square roots, *variable substitution)

    2. Which of the following are prerequisite concepts for completing the area of a parallelogram? (measuring height, perpendicular distance, *area of a rectangle, *sum of angle measures, *congruent triangles, fractions, parallel lines)

    3. Which of the following prerequisite skills and concepts should students understand before being introduced to problems in which they divide a decimal number by a decimal number? (*multiplication by 10's and 100's, *simple division, rounding, fractions, *multiplication facts, properties of zero)

    Thanks again! :)

  • Is there an easy way to remember how to go from logarithm to exponents?

I'm doing a little last minute studying for a test in the morning, and I'm having a hard time coming up with any easy way to remember how to go from logarithms to exponents (and vice versa). I was trying to come up with something like a^b=c, but then it's log a c=b, so that doesn't really make it any easier. A creative tip would be super helpful! thanks a lot!!

  • How to compensate for low sample return?

I had a test, and on the following question, I got two of three choices correct. I'm not sure which one I got wrong and what the correct answer is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

An educator is conducting a survey on a random sample of students. Only 20% of the sample responded. How should he compensate for the low amount of responses?

    A. Send reminders.

    B. Adjust findings to compensate for sample imbalance.

    C. Change sample size to equal the number of responses.

    D. Find substitute subjects in classes taught by the educator.

    E. Offer a reward for completing the survey.

    F. Use each sample twice.

We had to choose three of them, and i chose A, D, and E, I think. Thanks!!

  • How can I use integration rules to find antiderivatives of algebraic functions?

I'm having a hard time with this, and it's extremely confusing to me. So far, I understand that if you have a problem where you have to find out what x^3 is a derivative of, you would add one to the exponent and then multiply by one over that new exponent and add C to it. So, the antiderivative of x^3 would be 1/4x^4. I get that part, but i don't understand when there are fractions involved, such as to find the antiderivative of 1/x.

Is there a website that has rules for this, or some practice examples or something? Thanks for any help.

  • Set notation for a quadratic inequality problem?

I'm having a hard time with the set notation for solving this type of problem. I understand how to do it, by factoring and setting each part of it equal to zero and then testing to see where the answer would fall. But, I don't understand the notation I'm supposed to be using. For example, here's one of the problems I was working on and the choices for answers:

x^2-25<0 (I factored it out and got (x+5)(x-5)<0.)

    a. (infinity, -5] U [5, infinity)

    b. [-5,5]

    c. (-5, 5)

    d. (infinity, -5) U (5, infinity)

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain the notations for me! Thanks a lot!

  • What is the best preorder deal for GH 5 on Wii?

I've been trying to decide where to preorder Guitar Hero 5, looking for the best deals. Now that I only have one day left, I was leaning towards Walmart.com, since it's only $49, and you get a $10 gift card.

Has anyone else seen any better preorder offers?

    Thanks :)

  • Law of Large Numbers?

I understand what the law of large numbers is in my own words, but I'm working on an assignment, and I'm not sure what the answer is on the multiple choice.

    A. The random sample variance will converge in probability to the distribution variance if the sample is sufficiently large.

    B. The random sample variance will diverge in probability to the distribution variance if the sample is sufficiently large.

    C. The random sample mean will converge in probability to the distribution mean if the sample is sufficiently large.

    D. The random sample mean will diverge in probability to the distribution mean if the sample is sufficiently large.

I think it's A, but I'm not positive. Any help would be great!!

  • How can I use TI-83 to convert decimals to fractions?

I know there's a feature on the calculator to change decimals into fractions. I know you're supposed to be able to do it by pushing the MATH button, and then ENTER on the Frac part. But, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Am I supposed to hit something else? I'm trying to convert .5106383 to a fraction and every time I try, it just keeps repeating the starting decimal. It's sort of getting frustrating!

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions! thanks!

  • Having a problem with inverses in precalculus?

I understand how to find inverses, but I don't understand this one problem in particular. I need to find the inverse of a cube root (I think it's called). It's the little 3 outside near the top of the root sign. (Sorry, my terminology's not the best here) Then, under the root sign is 2x-3. It's multiple choice, and I'll give the answers, but I need to know how to solve it, more than I need to know the correct answer. The choices are (x^3)/2, 2/(x^3+3), (x+3)/2, or y-3.

Thanks for any help you can offer!
