My best friend spent time in rehab, once in highschool, and once as an adult. She participated in 2 different types. The one she was signed in by court order and had to stay a minimum of 30 days or as long as it took to certify her able to abstain from narcotics and go to 3 NA meetings a week for 6 months, this was a court order. The second time she went, she signed herself into a 3 day "detox' and then signed herself out and went to outpatient day programs for 60 days afterwards.
I went to visit her and i picked her up both times when she was released. No, it is not a "nuthouse" it is just simply a place to get isolated from any way to obtain your drugs of choice. It also provided a safe, medical staff to help with any severe withdrawl symptoms. It was a family atmosphere with private bedrooms and 24 hur a day support for when she needed it most.
If you think you need it or are forced to go, its alot better than what most people say it is. Just be carefull who you talk to in there, some patients are forced to be there, dont want to be there, and try to get close to others to either hook up with a new drug source or corrupt the others minds even more.
