Value of Car is less than the Damage, what should I give him?

I was recently in an accident and we are not using our insurance. The guy hit me, however it was somehow my fault. His vechile is worth about $900 and the damage, cost of a new door is $1400. What do I have to give him? The insurance company would have given him $900 and taken his car. Any advice?

We did have the police come and they gave us an option to file a report or just a traffic crash report (no insurance involved), which we decided to do. Any advice?

I agree on the 900 dollars. Offer the guy the 900, just as the insurance company would, and if he balks at it, take the police report and give it to the insurance company and let them pay him the 900 bux that he will have to wait weeks for.

Chances are if you use your insurance the increase in policy amount would be signifigantly less than 900 bux.

Even if you don't use your insurance call you local agent they will still advise you on how to handle it, and can also let you know what kind of rate increase there will be.

I totalled my car once, and they gave me like 4500 bucks, but my insurance only went up 200.00 a year for 3 years. 600 for me was cheaper that 4500.

Far as I know there is no problem not using insurance, they will not find out and try to cancel your policy.

I crashed a couple cars when I first learned how to drive, fenders and such, my brother hit a deer etc.

My Father usually always paid for the repairs becuase he had enough money to do so.

He never got cancelled once, besides the insurance companies have better things to do than creep around in your garage at night looking to see if there are an repaired parts on your car, as I see this as the only way they could "find out"

I just re-read the part about him "hitting you and somehow you did it" Are you sure this guy isn't taking you for a ride?

if he really hit you I would argue the matter in court before I give him a dime, especially if there is a police report.

Buy the wreck for $900, the same as the insurance. If they refuse to sell, let the insurance company handle it. You don't want to get sued, so watch what you say and do.

Do not give him anything, do not admit to fault, contact your insurance agent, you MUST also contact the police or BMV to file a Traffic Crash Report or you can both loose your licenses.

What you are considering is UNWISE, DON'T DO IT!

I definitely agree that you should offer him the money but I would go through the insurance companies anyways because that is what they are here for.

even if you are not using the insurance companies to sort it out you do need to tell them, not doing so will invalidate your policy if it discovered later. I would offer him the value of the car.
