Yes, and that was because the clutch cable had broken. I think it was a 1970 VW bus. And a 1960 VW bus. Hard to remember, because I've had seven VW buses.

Clutch cable, 1970 VW Beetle. It snaps and the pedal drops and that is it. Need new cable. Hydraulic clutches can be pumped up with several depressions but you know it needs service.

The model and year doesn't matter. That happens to any manual vehicle that has a hydraulic clutch when there is air in the hydraulic system. First thing to do is inspect the slave cylinder for brake fluid around the dust boot. If it's dry check for leaks by the master cylinder to brake booster. You may have to take the master cylinder loose from the brake booster and pull it away from the brake booster to see if there is any brake fluid coming out of the master cylinder by the push rod. Check the clutch lines for leakage too.

That happened in my '72 Dodge Colt when the clutch cable snapped at about 250,000 miles, but the pedal came back up.

Just as with brakes, if it sinks to the floor you lost your fluid.
And if it doesn't return the return spring is gone

I don't recall if the clutch pedal failed to come back up or not. But, the clutch cable on my fathers VW Rabbit broke. I was able to drive it to his house because it had a fully synchronized transmission. If I came to a full stop, I had to shut of the engine and restart while in first gear.
I don't remember the year. It would have been in the late to mid 1970s.

No, but if it happens the master or slave cylinders have failed AND the return spring fell off of the clutch pedal shaft.
