Evolution says it was the egg. Changes start with the new generation and works through each one. You won't find changes in the old bird, but you will in the new generation.
I agree that the egg came first! Being a scientist and thinking logically about the question, the egg must come first because of evolution and the fact that you cannot have life without having a sperm and an egg. I don't think a chicken just appeared, but it evolved over time... just like everything else.
If you believe in evolution then logically, the egg came first. Dinosaurs laid eggs and chickens came later. If you're asking which came first, the chicken or the *chicken* egg then the answer is the same. You would have to see that eggs were there all the time and the chicken evolved. The almost-chicken animal would have laid that first egg containing the chicken embryo.
If you believe in creation then it depends on your individual religion.
