I think there are three main categories for how an individual can improve humanity:
1) Improve one's self
2) Improve you "immediate" space
3) Get involved in larger initiatives
Humanity is interconnected, so one doesn't need to immediately focus "out there" in order to be able to contribute to the general welfare of humanity. The people we come in contact with will be influenced by how we view and carry ourselves. Our immediate sphere is where most of us will have the most influence.
One of the oldest adages is still the most valid: Treat others like you would have others treat you. Call it Karma, call it common sense, call it wisdom passed on through the ages, the simple acts that we do in our interactions with others will have an affect on us as a person and those immediately around us.

I guess it need a huge energy to improve the whole humanity on earth but we can try ourselves to be a better person day by day. A big move begins with little steps, doesn't it?

Tonight I will be working on my disproof of the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The good news for Intelligent Design afficionados is that I (think) I can disprove FSM without disproving Christianity. The bad news is I can't disprove FSM without showing Intelligent Design to be a load of garbage.

There is nothing I can do for humanity. One person accomplishes nothing. Many people have to act in concert to get anything worthwhile done.

Being kind to someone is certainly a step in the right direction.
