I heard on the radio today that egg-laying hens are killed in a variety of horible-sounding ways after they are too old to lay eggs. I have been buying cage-free eggs for a while, hoping that the hens that lay these eggs are happier than regular hens. Does anyone know if their "retirement" is any better than average?

unfortunatly in most cases they are killed and believe me you do not know how. For some reason we seem to think that since it is no longer useful, then we can just get rid of them in the easiest and most cost effective manner available. Some just think they were meant to be our food, what we do with them is not an issue. Unfortunatly there is no such thing as retirment, sad but true since no one wants to incur the mercy expenses.
