Cause see, I think that if we truly have the gift of free will, and there is, in fact, a god, then by giving us this "free will", he would be encouraging us to question our faith and find answers for ourselves. You know, rather than just believe anything we're told by our parents or the church we were raised in (and had no say in choosing).

"Free will" implies that all are of sound mind. Does this mean that the mentally retarded or criminally insane have free will?

If that were the case, then heaven would be waiting for everyone. But I see your point, what happens to salvation being a loving offer if God's wrath must be endured after death when we choose against it? And thus we need to question whether the ability to choose God exists at all.
I don't think taking away this ability makes us robots if God chooses us, unless you look at God as evil by causing us to sin or to do good. The only other solution is to look at man as so weak and incapable that he lost his ability with the fall of Adam. And that necessitates salvation if man is going to escape his predicament.
I also agree with you that we do need to question our faith and get the answers we need. I hope this one helped.
