I'm thinking of switching from a laptop to a desktop. My apartment building offers free wifi. I know I can make a desktop wifi-capable, but will it take my current laptop wifi card? Or is the technology different? Is there a benefit to using a USB wifi access device instead?

Just buy a wireless network card for your desktop, simplest easiest way to do it. Especially if you use the usb adapters, you don't even have to open up your computers case then.

there are some manufacturers that make pci adapters to fit inside a desktop, but your buying the adapter and another pcmcia card. your better off buying another network card. using the laptop as its currently configured, when you go mobile.
Most desktops these days have a network card standard.
