No, it's not as important. It is fairly important, in that we would get days off school/work and so on, and families would get together, but I think it's quite overshadowed by Christmas (many Christmas decorations are even already up by Thanksgiving because people are so excited!).
I think the reason Christmas is much more popular is because of the gift-giving. There is no gift-giving custom for Thanksgiving, you are simply supposed to be thankful.
Thanksgiving is held on the fourth Thursday of November.
The native Americans and pilgrims basically became friends (at the time at least, and at least these two groups of people...) and the native Americans gave many foods, such as corn, to the pilgrims. They had a big feast together to thank God for their alliance, the harvest, and for all of the other blessings in their lives.
As for what we would do, we would have as many family members as possible get together at one of our houses, and we would bake a turkey stuffed with stuffing, and also have mashed potato, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, traditionally. These were all foods from the native Americans. Also we sometimes decorate the table with a cornucopia to represent a bountiful harvest.
For me it's not as important as celebrating the birth of my Lord. No, present are given at Thanksgiving. Mostly it's just a day when the whole family gets together and eats great food. We talk about all the things that where thankful for. It's on the third Thursday of November so the date changes. It is a celebration of how the Indians help the settlers. Without the Indians the settlers would have starved that first winter.
Thanksgiving was the beginning of the end for the Native Americans, a terrible event in some folks eyes, including mine.
Having said that it has become over the years a celebration of the harvest. Many cultures throughout the world have a similar Fall celebration. Ours is really no different, it just happens to coincide with a significant event in our countries history. It was started by the first pilgrims to celebrate making it through their first year in America.
It is normally celebrated on the third Thursday of November, I think. It isn't as an important as Christmas is to Americans, some will say Thanksgiving is only to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas shopping season....LOL
Thanksgiving is the 3rd Thursday in November. (whatever day that falls on). we don't give gifts, we make a large meal with family and friends.
It's to mark the day when Pilgrims and Indians got together for a huge and peaceful meal. each group brought there own food to share with everyone. I never heard of a peace treaty at that time (they were british, not Americans. just so you know)
Thanksgiving is not a time of gift giving. It's a time of gathering together with family and friends to celebrate and give thanks for all the blessings we have. It's also a time for relaxation and eating too much. It is not a religious holiday like Christmas. (Don't let all the sales and marketing people out there hear about the no gift thing. They might take it as an opportunity to commercialize the heck out of Thanksgiving like they have Christmas!)
