Playmate for my dog?

I would like to get another dog, so my Maltese has a buddy, I have always heard dogs like to be together. What breed should I get...another Maltese?

Why not go to your local shelter and see if there are any doggies there that would be a good fit for you and your Maltese?

You would be saving a dogs life. Any dog can get along with a Maltese. You can bring your dog with you and see how they interact.

If there's any local shelters around where you live, you might have some luck and find a small dog. =]
Or if you'd rather buy a puppy, I'd say get another Maltese, a Pomeranian or a Chihuahua. I can tell you that Pomeranians are just about the happiest dogs you'll ever meet. They always look like they're up for a good time and they're very sociable with people and other dogs. (Small, tiny kids that like to chase...not so much.) One bad thing about poms is that some tend to bark a lot when they hear someone at the door. Though this can be fixed with training.

Chihuahuas are fun too. (Though not as sociable as the Poms.) They think they are big protectors and will *attempt* to protect you if they think you're in harm. It's REALLY REALLY important to socialize them at a young age so they know that strangers and other dogs aren't out to harm them. But they're a cheerful and playful companion all around. =] They seem to be smart too. My chi is trained to use pee pads and if we don't clean up his mess in time, he'll grab some toilet paper off the roll and bring it to us. (Seriously!)

Really, any dog-friendly breed will be fine. Even many large breeds do well with small dogs. My golden retrievers play with a shih tzu and they are all friends.

Another Maltese is fine but any dog that is friendly with other dogs will work. A spayed or neutered dog of the opposite sex will get along best (and your current dog should be spayed or neutered).

Chances are you can find a great dog at your local shelter.

I would take your maltese with you to your local animal shelter. That way you can find a dog that you AND your maltese get along with. They usually have rooms that you can go in so you and your pooch can get to know other pups. Good luck!

get a dog that matches the temperament of your dog so that they will get along better. same breed might work or a dog that will be the same size as your will make is less stressful on your dog. try a maltese rescue they can help find a good match.
