Your opinion on dogs having playmates?

From personal experience some dogs like a companion. I have a lab mix who was very lonely when her friend died. After about a year we finally got a german shepherd mix puppy and she is happy. Before we got the puppy the lab mix was whining at night and refusing to go outside to the dog run. We have had the puppy for a month and she is much happier. No more whining and no more refusing to go out.

I had discussed this dogs behavior with the Vet. and the Vet. suggested we get another dog.

Now on the other hand, my son has a chihuahua mix who could care less about other dogs. That dog is a people dog, specifically he is obsessed with my son.

I think it's a good idea to get your Dachshund a playmate, and thank you so much for doing your research ahead of time! Anyhow, while every dog is different, and some don't mind staying alone for a while (my Chihuahua doesn't have a problem with this when everyone is at school/work), it may be a good idea to get your dog a companion. I would test it out first, though. See how she reacts when nobody is around for however long you plan to be away at a time.

Also note that Dachshunds are prone to jealousy and aggressiveness, so if you do decide to get another dog, make sure she gets along well with him.

Since you are gone alot a companion is a good idea. However, this will not solve the getting into the trash problem. Your dog will just teach the new dog that playing in the trash is fun. Dogs teach each other the bad things. Not the other way around.

RE the boyfriend; My opinion is that boyfriends have no right to tell you how to spend your money. Husbands have a say but boyfriends don't.

I have a 2.5 year old female miniature dachshund, and I found she would act out a lot when left alone [destructive behavior when she wasn't crated] because she missed us so much and got anxious when she was left alone. We ended up adopting a kitten a little more than a year ago and the two of them have become the best of friends. I think that having a playmate can make a huge difference in the personality of your dog.

Well you really do need to search your soul about your boyfriend. If I was dating someone, and he didn't like dogs, I would dump him. When I was in high school and my dog didn't like the boy friend, I dumped the boyfriend, and the dog was always right, so you really do need to think about that. I think it is smart to stay with breeds you know, since you know what to expect. You have to correct the trash issue, or you will have double trouble. I moved my trash can to the laundry room, it is a little harder on me, but it solved the problem. Maybe you could child gate the dogs out of the kitchen so they couldn't get into the trash. I always have two or three dogs, and they get along well, but I make sure to step in if there is drama. The can work some things out for themselves, but any unacceptable behavior, I correct. They are each others pack now, and I expect them to get along.

dogs are very social animals and it would most likely benefit a well socialized dog to have a play mate or other dogs in the family. it is your money do what you want it is only $100 that is cheap for a dog in my book. just make sure your boy friend is ok with having another dog ask him to forget about how much the dog costs does he want one or not and make sure it has nothing to do with price either. i still say if you like this puppy a lot $100 is very cheap for a dog so if you are settling for less then a show dog or a dog from a reputable breeder or whatever $100 is a steal to me!

I think you should get a playmate for her. It will keep her busy and entertained and if your boyfriend thinks the other dog a waste of money...then maybe look at shelters for dachshunds there should be some there.

Dogs are social animals. They prefer to be around other dogs or their humans. When left alone they don't do so good. I think getting a playmate for your dog is a great idea.

I think having another dog is the best thing. So your dog has company when your not around, and in general, and so he has a buddy that understands him at a dog level.

I wanted my Great Dane to be more socialized with dogs and to have a play mate, now she has a little sister, but she acts more like a mom, so it has worked out well for us.
