The legions as they existed in classical Roman times had already been abandoned in the 4th century. They were reduced in size to about 1000.
The Byzantines continued the late Roman system till after 640 when they adopted the 'theme' system of recruitment, which continued till the overrunning of Anatolia by the Turks in the 11th C.
