Why is it that when I drink alcohol and get a buzz the next day I have a horrendous hangover. My body aches, my head feels like I got hit with a bat and Im exhausted. My hangover sometimes last a couple of days. I also start to have lots of anxiety to the point that it makes me loose concentration and Any ideas to why this happens and how to avoid this. When I drink I usually don't drink more than a six pack.

I am not a physician and just offer these comments based on my experience as an addictions counselor. It would be important to find out whether your reactions to alcohol may be due to some medical disorder. So, with that in mind, I have a couple of comments on this post. First of all, a hangover is a good thing to have, in this sense: it tells you that alcohol is toxic and that you have had enough to poison your system a little. Second, persons who can drink a lot and not experience hangovers or a negative effect may be those who can, if not careful, go on to develop a problem. Often a person who can drink, say, 10 plus drinks and not be a little more than buzzed, and not have any ill effects the next day, may have a built-in tolerance that will allow him/her to drink more as time goes on and develop negative consequences such as blackouts. So, I am saying that a hangover is a protective factor and just means (absent a medical reason for your reactions to alcohol) that you may be a normal drinker who may need to reduce the amount of alcohol you drink to just enough to develop a mild buzz, and avoid a hangover. Also, there are some people who are very sensitive to alcohol and cannot tolerate it well at all; sometimes these people are of Asian descent and have flush reaction and other unpleasent effects. I don't know your gender, but women often experience ill effects more so than men because of a variety of reasons, including not having as much of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. Lastly, ask yourself why you would continue to drink the amounts that result in such a miserable reaction the next day.
Alcohol acts as a diuretic. When you drink you'll find that you urinate more than usual. That's the alcohol forcing your body to remove fluids. When you have a hangover, it's your body's way of saying that it's dehyrated and that you're missing alot of electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium. When you drink it will cause alot of sugar loss as well. There's really nothing you can do about a hangover except drink plenty of fluids like Gatoraide. Eat a banana or two and rest. It takes time to get drunk and it takes time for you body to get back to normal.
haha! sucks for you! sorry.....is not drinking an option??? you should follow up all the drink w/a ton of water and maybe some food........but if you are starting to get anxiety from drinking as well then that may well indicate that you are developing a drinking problem....
ALKA SELTZER does wonders!!! and some b12's wont hurt also but maybe only 2 besides your daily vitamin and lots and lots of water. Stay away from caffeine it will only make it worse.
