How to REALLY clean a glass top stove?

I'm not an idiot in general, but I've not had a glass top stove before and we're just not making friends... There's always rings from spills that I can't get off. We're renting and I'll have to have it looking spiffy this summer when we get to move out -- help me figure out what to do. Am I allowed to use an SOS pad? Will that scratch the surface? It's a newer unit, if that makes a difference. I've used a variety of cleaning solutions, including those specifically for glasstop cook surfaces. So, I'm wondering if my methods or tools are wrong. I need advise!

The instruction manual that came with my Whirlpool Glass Top says to very carefully scrape the cooked on spills, etc with a sharp razor blade while the cook top is cool. Then wipe that off with a soft damp cloth, you then apply the glass top stove cleaner & follow the directions. This works for me! I have a tool that I got at the hardware store that has a handle & I replace the razor each time I clean. Be careful & good luck!

NO SOS PAD! Use soap and water to get it slightly wet. Scrape off heavy stuff with a new razor blade. Then use a white nylon scrub pad to get the rest with glass top stove cleaner. Then, buff with a soft cloth. The glass top stove cleaner has silicone in it and will leave a protective shiny coating. Green scrub pads and sos pads will scratch the surface making it harder to clean in the future.

Most grocery stores have stove glass top cleaner. I apply mine with a cleaning rag then wipe dry with clean towel. Also if you have to scrape use a plastic edge. Mine came with my stove.

The first thing I did was turn all the burners on low; turned them off and wiped it down with Clorox then, let it sit a few mins. before using Soft-Scrub cleanser on it. After the first time I burned something onto the surface, you may be positive-positive, I put on the B-B-Q gloves and cleaned the surface while it was, still, hot. If the Soft-scrub doesn't take off the grit, make a paste of dishwasher detergent and let that sit for a while then use a wet sponge to scrub down. I think SOS pads might scratch it - I never thought to use them for this reason.
