Call and talk about a payment plan. Most vets will accept a down payment for an emergency lacking funds. Other Animal Hospitals may even have a fund for just this kind of situation. You can also try www.carecredit.com - most vets accept it. It similiar to a credit card, but is interest-free for 6 mos. Call your Humane Society. They probably have to deal with this all the time, and can at least off suggestions. Whatever you do, do it now.
You've gotten a lot of responses. Right now I can tell you that you do NOT need to be ridiculed - life can throw curveballs at you and I know you want to help your dog. Of course you wouldn't choose to be in this position.
Call your regular vet (for referrals) or a shelter. Animal shelters regularly spay and neuter and euthanize dogs and cats, sometimes as little as $10. I can tell you one thing: DON'T DO IT YOURSELF. There's no way you can do it yourself without it being extremely cruel or illegal. The animal's comfort comes first, and because shelters can be very stressful, get a friend to help you drive to a shelter, take some treats and say your goodbyes. If your dog always wanted some chocolate or a big steak, now is the time. Your dog will be a lot happier than having to suffer.
Are you in the land of the free. The American dream ! ? Apple pie and the biggest and best ?
Here in the UK you can take any sick animal to the PDSA peoples dispensary for sick animals and just donate what you can afford.
Pet's are not just for RICH people the same way KIDS aren't. (Stop giving this one a hard time here,as if watching a faithful old companion wither away slowly is not enough, your all stating the obvious and rather sharply with it) (well most)
Anyone can fall on hard times and in the present economic climate,it is no wonder !
We also have the RSPCA royal society for the protection and care of animals. If you let your dog or any animal suffer knowingly then you can and will be prosecuted.
I would sell anything ,do anything, borrow ,beg or steal to prevent any animal from suffering and especially one i have loved and am certain you will do that too.
What gets me about the judgmental approach is that HUMANS do not get the same protection, who do you know that was "put down" My brother had pancreatic Cancer and asked, begged to be put out of his misery. But we do not do that for people. Strange that isn't it ! My Father had stomach Cancer. My Aunt had Cancer of the Vulva. These three brave souls all suffered needlessly, yet we wouldn't knowingly allow that to happen to our pet's.
Qiut beating this chick up about this. It is hard to go through this. Someone being on hard times can come and go in a matter of ays. We had a huge problem last month that had us counting change for milk. Once the problem was fixed we were fine. Would you rather her wait till she can get ahold of a bunch of money or help her dog stop hurting now???
Hon, have you called your vet? Some will help you out with this. They really don't like animals to suffer like this if it is possible to help. I was able to get my vet to come to my home put our 12 y/o Sheltie down and give our other 2 their shots and exams for $80 total. The part of the bill for our Sheltie was $35 And that was the doc and an assistant driving almost 45 mins to my house. THE SAME DAY I CALLED!
The SPCA would help as well. Call and tell them what is going on.
I hope you and your pup have the peace you need soon.
There are so many options for going to the vet if you can't afford it. 1. Humane shelter 2. Care Credit 3. Loans 4. etc... The person who mentioned that you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford one is right. Not to be mean, but if you love that dog you know it's the right thing to do by humanely euthanizing your dog. This is something that would cost about a dollar a day for 4 months on a payment plan. Your family can afford that, and if they can't they're just being cheap.
