I have a fireplace in my house, and would like to install a stove to supplement the heating system in my house (approx. 2,000 sq.ft.). Any suggestions for the type of stove? Pros and cons? It has to look nice as well as give me heat!

I have heard that wood stoves can be much cheaper in the long run. You might consider a wood pellet stove. They are usually simpler to run and maintain. They are also cleaner. These articles will get you started.

I would ask around and get a price for the cost of firewood be for you make that investment. Also check with your homeowners insurance too, because they might make it go way up, or cancel it all together. You must also look into if your fireplace is up to code. Where I'm from you can only have one chimney for the fireplace and must have a separate one for your furnace. You should also invest in a carbon Dioxide monitor,it is released when burning wood, a sightless odourless, poisonous gas. And wood must cure properly so it doesn't create creosote in the chimney, creating a chimney fire. Get the cost of a chimney sweep in your area, that must be done at least twice a year.

A woodstove will save you tonnes of money especially if you have your own lot of wood to cut. There are also (around here) many local people who cut and sell wood by the bushcord, Woodstoves have come a long way and are not nearly as dirty or smelly as they once were. I would recommend you get an epa stove and make sure its large enought to hold a 8inch wood length (most sellers of fire wood willnot cut smaller then this) IF you do buy wood make sure before its delivered you have a place to store it. A bushcord takes up alot of space. It will raise the cost of house insurance but it only raised mine 3.56 per month and buy burning wood we figure we save about 150$ per month. I live in Northern ONtario and I burn about 5 cords per year and each cord cut, split, dried, and delivered is 235$ Make sure you dont install yourself get a certified woodstove installer and this too will make a difference to your insurance.

wood stoves seem like a good idea but they dont effectivly heat a house
they are also a masive fire danger and the wood takes up alot of space
