Need to fix a heat pump?

We have a Ruud heat pump that I believe the motor is burned up. The unit was running, but the fan blades got stuck by too much ice in the unit. What does the motor consist of that I would look at needing to be replaced?

I am pretty smart and pretty handy, so is something that I could do myself with proper directions?

ditto on answer from "gizmoe" if its the motor......you might also try melting the ice with warm water to free the blades..then turn unit off for a couple hours, then turn it on to see if motor was really bad..if it seems to turn at full rpm and no unusual noises, its probably ok.. then you have to figure what caused blades to get stuck in ice...was it freezing rain /sleet that built up while unit was off or did the unit fail to defrost...a bad fan motor will not typically cause excessive frost/ice that the normal defrost cant keep up with....if failed defrosts suspected,,best to call hvac co...but if you must do it yourself,be sure power is off to indoor and outdoor units,,and you must get exact replacement defrost board and senser and replace wire for wire exactly..if you accidently put a 240 volt fan wire [ some boards have fan wires terminals, some dont ] where a 24 volt wire belonged it wont be pretty....also there is no guarentee that the board is the problem,,but its the most likely cause for no defrosts...........dan

If you know the motor is faulty you would remove the fan motor and blade and take it into a parts store and they will match up a replacement.
Shafts need to be cleaned and penetrating oil added before trying to remove the blade.
A puller is sometimes required to remove.
The motor will have a run capacitor attached and is sometimes a dual capacitor for the compressor too. Unless you can test the capacitor and know it's good and the new motor requires the same rating you could reuse. Otherwise replace it with the required one.
Verify the wiring arrangement according to the wiring diagram so you are familiar with it as it will be color coded.
It might be better to call a service company, they will have all the proper tools and parts to replace it in a timely manner.
It's possible the capacitor is faulty and the motor is not.

the owner is only required to supply an appropriate working warmth source for the iciness, till the hire particularly shows in any different case. definite, the 'decrease back up warmth source' will paintings competently, and definite, it will be rather extra high priced, because of the fact such is electrical powered resistance heating. it may be equivalent to working a very electric furnace.

The best person to ask is a dealer for your heat pump.
Unfortunately, he's also the one most likely to say "no" to get your business.
