and this was 2 days ago. The pain is still very bad and my hand and wrist are really swollen. It's tender to the touch but, the actual spot the IV was isn't in pain just slightly below that and the side of my hand and wrist...I called the Dr that did it but with it being New Years Day they weren't open. What can I do it ease the pain and swelling?

My friend had that happen to her. Her arms and legs were really swollen. Its from all of the fluids in your body, you should rest for a couple of days and then start to walk around to reduce the swelling.

Is your hand warm to the touch where it is painful, or do you have a red line going up your arm? Those are just 2 signs of infection, if you have the red line go to the ER to be seen. Other than that, until you can see your doctor, just treat the symptoms. Elevation of your hand higher than your heart will help with the swelling, throbbing, and speed up healing. While sitting or lying just stack some pillows and rest it on them. Also you can use ice to keep the swelling down, and take Ibuprofen for the pain and swelling (make sure to take it with food).

Hot compresses help with swelling and pain. Give it a week before you start to worry. I had a bruise from an IV for a year before it started to go away. It probably is from the IV bursting your vein and some of the fluid got into your arm.

Apply an ice pack to the area for ten minutes on/ten minutes off. Keep your arm elevated as much as you can, to keep the swelling down also. Take what you normally take for pain as directed. Call your doctor as soon as he's back in is office.
