i am 17 and i feel really weird using the term "best friend". i do have a friend who i would consider my best friend, yes. but i feel weird calling her that in front of my other friends, so i just call her my friend or my good friend. i don't want them to feel that they are being ranked. is it weird to feel weird about this?

Ranked! That is the exact word I would use. If I like my friends I don't want to rate one above the other.
Ignore that illiterate ape in the first answer. I don't think its weird at all, I feel the same way and I'm 19. The only best friend I have is my boyfriend and it took a long time for us to be where we are.. don't worry, girls are stupid. Just be glad you have more than one, cuz I have like.. 3 good girl friends. hah i dont even call them best friends either.
I go through the same thing sometimes. I think the awkwardness comes from the fact that you know you are faking an emotion. You're smiling because someone wants you to, not because you feel like it, so it feels unnatural and weird.
I would say that is completely normal. I too had a 'best friend' but never introduced him that way...."This is my friend" should be adequate enough. It shouldn't take long for others to notice who you get along best with. You shouldn't be forced into stating who is top on your list.
I understand how you feel. I kind of regret telling my friend that she's my "best" friend. I feel like now she expects more from me. More that I have in me to give.
