Why do I feel weird about this?

I was just outside talking to a neighbor for a minute, and a new neighbor's kids started asking me all kinds of questions. (You know how kids are.) Anyhow, one of their questions was "Where's your daddy?" And I answered, "He's in Heaven." Being an atheist, I don't believe that, but I figured chances are these kids have been taught about 'God' and it'd be easier to just say that. But, why do I feel weird about it?

Thanks for your thoughts :)

You could have just said he passed away. Kids understand that.

I'm guessing that you don't really believe that and being an honest person ( at least you seem that way to me) it bothered you to not tell the truth about yourself. However, you probably did the smart thing--who knows if your new neighbors are religious nuts who would hound you night and day.

Yeah, you let us down. Dammit.

Nah, it's alright. I've kinda done things like that before. Unfortunately, religious people can't handle the truth so you have to be gentle and lie to them. It sucks, but whatever.

I do not blame you for feeling weird...

that is a very weird thing for a child to say...

but then it makes me wonder where the question really came from...

you've made a decision to be a little hypocritical and speak in defiance to your privately held beliefs in the interest of simplicity and brevity.

i'm not sure what i would have done in the same situation but i can understand why you did what you did.

    don't feel badly about it.

You should have said, "He has passed" or something like that. You feel weird because you are furthering a belief you yourself do not agree with.

Did you think about it before you said it?

sometime our heart doesn't want to believe what our head tell it to.

and I am sure that your mother believes that your father is in heaven.

    A) you dont like lying about what you believe

    B) it got you wondering about dad

    C) you assumed that is what the boy believed ... and fear it was bad to assume

    D) it just brought up some emotions for you

Because you told that child something that you yourself do not believe and now your conscience is working on you. You should have just told the child the truth and said that he passed on.
