Sit-down is more elegant than a buffet-style reception. And its a common misconception that buffets save you money because you actually need a lot more food for them! I'm a fan of sit-down and having lots of passed hors d'oeuvres for guests to sample and snack on during cocktail hour. You can also have a cheese and cracker display for people to walk up to and munch on. Or you can do your hors d'oeuvres buffet-style on a couple of tables through out the room and have guests mingle and check out the different tables. Check with the place you are having the wedding and see what the prices are and what you can afford. If you can swing it, I say do a sit-down. You can choose meal options that fit your budget as different options have different price ranges (like chicken vs. filet mignon). It also depends on your wedding style. Is it a backyard, casual wedding? Then buffet could work. If its at a hall, country club, or other more formal venue then I definitely would go with the sit-down. Just always make sure you have some options that appeal to everyone (like a vegetarian option for sit-down) and your guests will be happy!
i didn't do the whole sit down dinner with choices but i also didn't do the whole buffet dinner either....i made one meal...Chicken potatoes and corn with a roll and i had family members serve it to a line...everyone got one plate and once that was over everyone was allowed seconds until all was gone...but i also had chips and other snacks out on a table...with no refills....we were on a pretty short budget and we did our whole wedding by ourselves...having a planned meal saved us money and we cooked it all ourselves...rather than hiring a cater or making a million different dishes that could go to waste...we went to a place where you can buy bulk and we only spent probably 200-250 for a 100-125 person wedding...good luck and congrats...
I think buffets are always better. People can choose what they would like to eat and can do so at their leisure. Sit downs are more for the black tie, very formal weddings that are on a higher budget than what I have for sure.
