Just found a colt 1911 model 80 series in "used condition" for about $600. there are some minor scratches on the finish from use, but the rifling is decent and overall it looks in good condition. is this a good price?
i was looking for an entry level 1911 by either Norinco or Rock Island Armory, but if a genuine colt is only a couple hundred more than i'd take it.
oh, did the 5" model come with full length guide rods? if so what is a good "standard" length replacement?

Buy it and don't dislocate your shoulder by grabbing your wallet to quickly. I picked up a series 80 nickled job with tridjon night sights and a few minor rub marks for eleven hundred and thought I got a heck of a deal. Mine doesn't have a full length guide rod; I think it is an aftermarket option. It is sort of an interesting solution to a non-existant problem. The original setup works just fine so don't accessorize up the zing-yang; I am just a purist so don't go by my judgement.

That's a pretty decent price for a Colt, Series 80.
But, if you have $600 to spend, I'd look at a Taurus 1911. It comes with a nice load of custom features and it would run you about $600. They are nice guns, well finished, dependable, and accurate. Even comes with a lifetime warranty. Hard to beat deal.
I recently purchased a RIA 1911 for under $400. It was barely used (about a box worth of ammo through it) with a set of wrap around Pachmayrs and an extended safety. It's a real hammer.
Don't fool around with guide rods and crap when you first get it. Just take it out and shoot it (if you can find affordable ammo). Get a couple of boxes of 230 gr FMJ and get used to the gun. $600 is a pretty good deal.
