Main job specification: Dispose of Explosive Ordnance, or in layman's term, Bomb Squad or Garbageman for explosives. Go see the movie "The Hurt Locker." Even though, it (the movie) is not 100% accurate, but it is still a pretty good portrayal of what we do (But remember, it is a movie after all).

Well wether you join the Army or Marines depends on you. However you need to look at a back up plan in case you don't make it through training for some reason. As for what to join before doing EOD if you make it, well combat engineers work with explosives and such so that would be my guess.

Don't go and see the movie Hurt Locker. Navycrap, stop trying to pimp out bad movies of Army EOD techs. It was obviously based on Navy anyway, the main character's hair was too perfect.

Like NavyCrab said, we're basically the bomb squad for our respective services. We do everything from CONUS range clearance to rendering safe IEDs in sandy countries so that a certain pissy TF can have intel.

It's a great career, exciting and challenging .. constantly changing and there's always something new to learn. No one ever becomes a true expert in EOD .. always more to study.

Noodle,
Hate to state the obvious but you dispose of ordnance. IED's, dud's, etc..will be yours for blowing up.

For the Air Force, you can expect to be sent to bare bases in Iraq and Afghanistan to clear surrounding areas for land mines, bombs, rockets, mortars, and any other live/dead XFO. Its a cool job but you will be the first ones to a base - and sometimes on convoys - sent as the test rats on where there may or may not be bombs.
