Brand new HP laptop that just got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! Please help befor my mom goes crazy on me!?
Okay here's the issue with my 3 week old HP Pavilion dv4:
I start up, and it takes me to my log in, as normal, But even before my Desktop has finished loading, it takes me to the blue error screen, it only last for about 2 seconds, so i can only tell you that it says something about my protecting my Computer from threatening damage, im on safe mode right now and its letting me function. Im currently doing a full system scan with Norton. But this still happens when i go back to "start windows normally" What can i do to fix this, and what's causing it to happen? and if something needs to be replaced, how much will it cost me?

It depends on what is wrong with it.
If it's hardware, there is no cost; you're under warranty.
If it's software, you can fix it yourself for free.
You're going to have to post the actual error code that it generates. If you right click on "My Computer," select manage, and click "Event Viewer." You can look up the actual error code it generated. Post that here, and I will tell you what it means.
If it is hardware, I can point you to a local HP service center.
The first thing you want to test is the system memory. If you can get on another computer (well obviously you can since you posted this yahoo question) then download Memtest86. It's a program you will need to put on a CDROM so you can put it in the broken computer. When you boot to this CD, you will be able to scan your memory and see if you have any problems. If you do, you will have to replace the system memory. If you have 2 sticks of RAM then memtest will tell you which bank is bad (or if both are). Just remove the bad stick and run memtest again to make sure the one you have left is fine. If Memtest doesn't show any errors, then it's probably a software error. You'll have to boot to the windows XP disk and run a repair. As long as you can repair it, you won't lose any data, it basically just reinstalls windows on top of itself so you will still have all your documents and pictures and music and whatnot. Actually HP should have a hidden recovery partition. When the laptop boots it might give you an option to go into a repair mode. Do this but make sure you don't choose the option to wipe everything. If you do you lose all your data. There should be an option in there to do a recover without destroying everything. Good luck.
First of all: a virus should not cause a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). So you can skip the Norton The most common reason should be hardware. Did you plug in some new hardware (like an external drive?). Try to remove all the "unnecessary" hardware (f.e. a USB stick) and try to restart your PC in normal mode. If the computer starts normally then try to check which hardware device could cause the BSOD. OR ... software. Did the problem occur, when installing some new software ... try to delete the "damaging software" (do this in safe mode) then restart in normal mode. This should do the trick.
If the problems still persists, try to scan your PC for registry errors with the program Comodo Registry Cleaner (which you can download here: http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Registry-Cleaner/3000-2094_4-10895685.html). However, knowing that you have a brand new computer there shouldn't normally be a registry problem unless you messed around :S
Im with elguy on this one, you probably either deleted or replaced an original driver on the laptop, Most commonly the Video Card Drivers are Replaced with modded ones or gasp BETA versions.
HP likes to make their own drivers, they are not bad at all, I suggest you give them a try, for now just, Do a system restore and dont mess with any more of the drivers.
If you cannot do a system restore from the hard drive then at the very least go to hp.com and download the right drivers to reinstall back onto the computer.
P.S you can find the P/N on the bottom of your computer, its important since you can just enter that into the driver search and it will take you to the right place on HP.com
