Brand new HP laptop that just got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! Please help befor my mom goes crazy on me!?

The problem is caused by the Windows Update KB973879, which seems to specifically affect HP Pavillion dv Series laptops running Windows Vista 64-bit.

To fix the problem:

1. Start up your computer and continuously tap the F8 key. You will eventually see the 'Advanced Boot Options' screen, where you must select the Safe Mode option.

2. Once in safe mode, click the Start Menu and type "Programs and Features" (no quotes) in the search box. Press enter once the Programs and Features option is selected.

3. Select 'View installed updates' in the top left of the window.

4. Locate 'Update for Microsoft Windows (KB973879) in the list of updates. You can sort by name for easier searching by clicking the Name column. Click Uninstall at the top of the list when you have selected the correct update.

5. Click Restart Now. Your computer should now function properly.

The first thing you want to test is the system memory. If you can get on another computer (well obviously you can since you posted this yahoo question) then download Memtest86. It's a program you will need to put on a CDROM so you can put it in the broken computer.

When you boot to this CD, you will be able to scan your memory and see if you have any problems. If you do, you will have to replace the system memory. If you have 2 sticks of RAM then memtest will tell you which bank is bad (or if both are). Just remove the bad stick and run memtest again to make sure the one you have left is fine.

If Memtest doesn't show any errors, then it's probably a software error. You'll have to boot to the windows XP disk and run a repair. As long as you can repair it, you won't lose any data, it basically just reinstalls windows on top of itself so you will still have all your documents and pictures and music and whatnot.

Actually HP should have a hidden recovery partition. When the laptop boots it might give you an option to go into a repair mode. Do this but make sure you don't choose the option to wipe everything. If you do you lose all your data. There should be an option in there to do a recover without destroying everything.

Number 1 - if it is a 'brand new HP laptop' then it shouldn't cost you a dime to get it fixed by HP under warranty.

Number 2 - since it is new, you probably don't have that much important stuff on it, and you should have received system restore software. You can try reloading it to see if if fixes the problem.

Number 3- If not, then call HP, and find out where you need to take/send it to have them fix it ASAP so that they can reload it for you.

Number 4 - That's not a 'blue screen of death'.

ohh wow man its like everything you wrote came directly from my mouth or should i say experience. Ok, yesterday on the 25th august, i decided to shut down my 2 week old hp pavilion dv4-1435dx laptop and while i did that i was prompted to update the laptop which did itself as it was in the process of shutting down. I came back like an hour earlier and started the laptop and everything was great,the laptop configured the update properly and i was taken to the start up screen after putting in my password. After 2 mins or so i was taken to a blue screen just like the one you have on the picture and i was really scared. i called bestbuy and told them what happened, they said they couldnt help but i should call 1800-hp invent after speaking with a geek squad agent. so I called the number and i was told to do windows recovery which i did and still i was prompted to update the laptop and got the blue screen again. I called again and they told me that a lot of customers got the same problem and the only option left to fix it is by doing a system restore to an earlier date before the update, i did it and after that immediately put automatic updated off so u wont be prompted to install any updates and valla ur laptop is working as new as it was, the only option left to do after this is wait for Microsoft to comment on the recent update and let them release a new update to fix it.

If you hear or read anything new about the update please inform as i will be glad to update my laptop. i hope this works but if you fear doing the system restore please call 1800-hp invent and they will give you a step by step progress to do it and when they ask you whats wrong with your laptop just say you got the blue screen and they will help you as required, have a good day sir!.

Okay first of all its not your falt. blame mircosoft. Its a update that is installed byitself. Their is a driver issue with the update and it gives you the bsod. You have to restore your computer and disable automated updates for a while until this bug is fix. Your like the 50th person I told today, i work at geeksquad.
