it depends on airline and the miles required and may have to pay tax,check with them.

Mostly you get a "free" ticket when you redeem air miles. However with AA it would depend on the lead time. It costs $50 if you book within a week in advance, $25 if 2 weeks, $10 a month (something along this line) as handling fee.
