I had never heard of giving Christmas gifts to a childs daycare teachers before! Is this common practice? I understand school teachers. My child is 13 months, so what would be a good gift idea for his teachers?

I give a toy or book that can be used by the entire daycare. I use a home daycare that I know will benefit from that (one less thing for them to pay for out of pocket). If you use a daycare center then maybe a gift card to a nearby coffee shop? Or if he has more than one teacher then consider sending a fruit or chocolate basket for them to split.
Yea my kids are in daycare and at the end of the year we do give them a small thing-however since it's a Daycare Centre and not a home provider their staff is big-between teachers and assistants, students, helpers...
So what I do is just bake some Xmas cookies/sweets and take them to daycare for when they have a coffee break-that way everybody can share and it's a treat. And it's not expensive, I mean it better than having to BUY something for the teachers and what to buy etc...
Up until this August my daycare provider (in home) kept both of my sons during the day. Every year we would give her a $100 Visa gift card inside a Christmas card as a gift. Like Seafoam (above) she is like part of our family and we use Christmas as one of the occasions to show our appreciation for taking such good care of our children.
I think most people give a small gift to their daycare provider and teachers. Personally, I'd stick with something homemade, like cookies. I've heard of people giving small gift cards too.
It is common practice, but people need to remember that they're called "gifts" and not "expectations" for a reason.
Given that they get so many gifts, teachers and daycare workers often appreciate small giftcards to Starbucks, Target, Barnes and Noble, etc. Or, they're happy with a thoughtful note.
