If your flabby right now, start off with BJJ, that will get your cardio up without killing you like jumping into muay thai will, you will get lean and flexible with the right trainer and you will naturally gain strenght as well especially with plenty of training in the gi. Then from there also do muay thai but dont stop the BJJ either, plenty of MMA gyms offer classes in both, and actually traditional American boxing will get you more "buffed out" than muay thai will.
If you're flabby and looking to shed the weight and sculpt nice lean strong muscles, take up Muay Thai. The kicking alone is enough to tone your core muscles into a nice six pack. Keep in mind you won't be packing on a lot of bulky muscle as Muay Thai is a very strenuous activity that burns a lot. For muscle gain you'll need to supplement your Muay Thai with some weight training and a sound diet.
BOTH. it's crucial to be able to fight where ever the fight may go if your a muay thai guy that is great if the fight stays standing, but say your fighting a wrestler who will take you down, in muay thai there isn't any training from your back or any ground fighting. same with BJJ if your a grappler and your fighting a muay thai guy with good takedown defense he's going to force you into striking with him, because you won't be able to take him down to use your Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). so it's very important to combine training in both of these martial arts to have an effective fighting style.
lifting weights is the only thing that will build you muscle muay thai would be good for cardio and learning the art and bjj is pretty good cardio too but you cant use any of these arts for building muscle because you have to stress the muscle for it to build kicking and punching wont do that only weights
