What are the differences in the Ipod generations?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I truly do not know...what are the differences between the different generation Ipods? I want to get my son an IPod Touch for his birthday, the one that does everything an IPhone does except make calls but I don't know which one to look for...Thanks for any help

Unless you're going to buy a refurb or used one, the generations don't matter. The current one is all that's available in stores or from Apple. In the case of the iPod Touch in particular, the prices of the latest generation were reduced and they have more features.

Get the latest one. With each new generation, Apple usually adds something on to the iPod(ex: the added a camera to the nano) so it's always best to get the latest one. Here is the newest ipod touch: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#iPod_touch_late2009

Hope this helped!
