How do I remove a rearview mirror from my windshield?

It has that strange glass glue on it. How do i CAREFULLY remove it so that I can put another mirror onto it? The one that is on the car is driving me nuts, and the adapter for the new one is a different shape. How do i remove it from my windshield without breaking it?

Not talking about the screw that attaches it. I'm talking about the metal base of the mirror that glues to the windshield.

try soaking a rag with acetone(fingernail polish remover) or laquer thinner.Duct tape the rag saturated with it over it and let it sit.maybe it will soften it up.or be real carefulwith a razor blade.Or call the local windshield replacement co. and ask them how they do it.that would probably be your best bet.

I've remove them with fingernail polish remover the easiest, because it has a little applicator brush in the bottle. I just keep applying it to the top of the mount and pulling on it until the adhesive softens. Mineral spirits or lacquer thinner will also work with a small brush. The one that said they don't come off has obviously never had a mirror fall in the floor in the summer sun.
