Of all the vehicles to convert this is probably one of the easiest...

The front axle from a Jeep Cherokee preferably since it is a high pinion (88-99) or a front axle from a TJ Wrangler will bolt right in. The suspension and steering is the same for 2wd and 4wd.

You will need to either swap the transmission for a 4wd trans or swap the output shaft to a 4wd. This will need to match the splines in the transfer case you select, stock in the XJ were the NP231 and NP242. You will also need the front and rear driveshafts. The front can most likely come from an XJ, however the rear may have to be custom made or come from a 4wd Comanche.

You will have to do some cutting for the 4wd shifter, and perhaps relocate/hook up a couple of sensors.

It's definitely doable and many people have. Search on the sites pickupman listed. If you're going to spend the time to do a 4x4 conversion you should upgrade your rear axle as well. If you're staying below 35s an 8.25 will be fine.

particular. it is likewise available to attain a miles less costly 4x4 with a nasty engine or physique injury and bolt in the components to make yours a 4x4. The unibody, suspension, and all are precisely a similar from the 2wd to 4 wheel force on cherokees and grand cherokees. in case you would be off street a competent bit and don't desire the difficulty of completely switching to 4 wheel force, I exceptionally recommend a rear locking differential to function some traction.
