What type of things do they look for on admissions and resumes and the works. What things can I do to greatly improve my chances. Ive been out of high school for 2 years and currently with the military. I am trying to prepare now so that when I get out, I can use my GI Bill + saved money to get into the best schools possible. (i.e. MIT, Harvard, Princeton).

Top schools are looking for students who had the highest grades in the hardest classes and got top test scores - but that's just to compete with everyone else. Then you need to find a way to stand out. Good ways to stand out in physics or engineering include earning a patent on something you invented or doing original, published scientific research. That's what can really make you stand out - but plenty of students applying have that on their resumes as well.
