What to do for my 20th birthday?

I want to do something special with my friends to celebrate my 20th birthday, but I'm not sure how to plan it. I planned my own birthdays when I was in middle- and high school, but those were for kids, and most of my new friends are a bit older than me and not *as well known as my childhood friends were. I'm not sure where to begin.

Can anyone give me some suggestions for planning a 20th birthday party to be held in a relatively small house or very large back yard+deck?

My friends and I are all relatively nerdy people (and we say this in a good way), but there will be some less-nerdy among us as well. This wont be a massive group of people at all, probably less than 20, but not sure yet.

It wont upset me if my guests bring alcohol or drink at my party as long as they do so responsibly. I trust most of them to do so, but one or two are the type who equate parties to the prelude to a hangover, and as it is, they probably wont even come, so it should be good.

The majority of adults think a party means alcohol. You've been one of my contacts for two years now, and I dont' picture you as the drinking type. You kind of have to know the people for something like this.

You could have a family friendly barbecue. Tell people they can bring thier kids. That way people know its a family friendly atmosphere. Have some vollyball set up. That also leaves it open to invite people all ages, senior citezens and everything.

happy twentieth!

Keep it simple, like a bar-b-que or a casual potluck dinner. Maybe plan the menu around a certain type of food you enjoy, say Italian or Japanese. Is it going to upset you if someone brings some saki to have with Japanese food? Let them know if it will be a dry party. Some people will just show up with a bottle of wine, like a hostess gift. I usually do to a potluck but I'm hardly a drinker. It really doesn't matter if the guests are a little older or a little nerdy, almost everyone enjoys a simple party. Sometimes it can feel like a chore if you have to find a costume for a theme party or something like that and some people just feel awkward when things are very planned and they feel like they have to do things a certain way.

Have fun.
