Drag out the manual
plug your laptop into the router using a cable
access the router
enter the user name and password
go to the wireless settings
enable security
use WPA encryption
give your router a unique SSID
save your settings
disconnect the cable
connect to the router using the new SSID and pass phrase
Once that is done go back into the router using the cable
change the user name and password
save the settings
If you are really worried, enable MAC ID filtering
Enter the MAC ID of your laptop (be careful - blow this step and you will have to reset the router and start over)
now only your laptop can access the router

Have fun

What's the model of your router? Securing it will not resolve your WiFi not always working when using your laptop though.

Pull up a command prompt (black screen) and type in the words ipconfig and hit enter key. Your default gateway is what you want to type into your browser to get to the log in screen. Look on bottom of router and google the default password and username for it. Should be fairly simple once you see the interface of the router. It's just some typing and clicking.
