Why do Jeep CJ5s not have a title?

I'm shopping around for a Jeep CJ5. I like the older body style, and they're in my price range.

About 4/5 don't have a title though... I've looked at other vehicles, too, and these older Jeeps have an exceptionally high rate of not having a title.

Why is this? Also, is it a problem, and can it be corrected?

The only reason I can think of is the title was lost and/or the Jeep has been on a ranch or farm ever since where they weren't worried about registration. Without the title you won't be able to register it under your name since you need the title, duly signed over by the owner, to prove it is now yours. If the person who is trying to sell it is truly the owner they can apply for a "Lost title" at the DMV. If they can't or won't then you'd be a fool to buy it.

Before 1973 in many states a title wasn't issued. It should come with a transferable registration. If you have a transferable registration you may be able to apply for a title but that varies by state. Titles are somewhat of a new concept.
