Lead tinsel and young children?

My mother is super excited about finding some real lead tinsel online for her x mas tree this year. I have 2 young children (ages 2.5 and >8 mos) that visit her fairly often, as well as my step sisters 4 year old and I'm a bit concerned. I mentioned my concerns about the lead to her, and her responses were "well, just keep them away from the tree then" and "We all grew up with lead tinsel, and we're fine now."

I'm just not sure how seriously to take this. Would I be overreacting to keep my children away from her house until the holidays are over with. Or is the risk really minimal enough that I would be doing more harm to my children by keeping them away from loving grandparents?

I would not take the chance, even if I come across as overreacting. I grew up with lead tinsel as well and have never heard that a child got lead poisoning due to the tinsel but why take a risk? The grandparents can visit in your home, can't they? If they want their grandkids to visit them, they can get rid of the tinsel.

You can still get lead tinsel? Really? I wouldn't put it on my tree, but I guess since your mom no longer has kids, she can do what she wants. I wouldn't avoid going there, but I would keep a very close eye on the kids. I would think the 4yo is old enough to know better than to put it in her mouth. The other two I would try to keep away from the tree and watch them really close.

Loving grandparents would understand that tinsel is an attractive nuisance to young children, and keep it away from them.

seriously...NO tinsel on the x-mas tree....its a choking hazard for one...well that should be enough
