Could/should i get an iep?

Question

I'm not sure if I even could, since I'm not disabled in the typical term.

I've had a headache since april 20th 2010, following a cold. Since then, I've had multiple cts scans, mris, lumbar punctures, and a dhe infusion that caused me to be in the hospital for 8 days. I ve been diagnosed with ndph, and am in constant pain which, on a scale of 1-10, varies from a 5 to 10, and is usually at a 7 or 8.
I'm currently homeschooled simply because I can't go to school.

Next year ill be a junior, and id really like to go back to school for my last two years of high school and on to college, eventually hopefully to become a neurologist. But that's the problem. I currently can not go to school for 7 hours without any pain medications.

My neighbor(who is a psychologist) says I'm technically disabled.

Would I be able to return to school if I got an iep? And how would I go about that?

An IEP isn't something which you yourself can request (underage). You have to talk with your parents.

They would have to legally consent to have testing on you performed. And they would need to sign off on the testing. Then they would need to attend a conference to discuss the results of this testing and how to implement the findings.

An IEP designs specialized curriculum(s) in area(s) where learning is affected because of disability.

A 504 plan is better if you are only encountering physical problems (ie need medicine at school but have no problem learning), again you need your parents consent, being under age. And there is the permission, conference process....etc.

Never ever disregard that YOU have the entire rights. Write down what you want to invite or understand and convey it to the assembly. Things you ask for and so they occur to conform to, be certain it's written IN the IEP, now not simply on a few part observe pad. I have identified lecturers to try this, they write your wishes, however NOT at the IEP, so that it will make it regulation. If you do signal it and don't like how matters are going, you'll name an IEP assembly ANYTIME you want...as soon as per week if you happen to wish to. Again, YOU have the entire rights so do not allow them to push you round. Having mentioned that, usually the whole thing will pass very easily. The group is there to aid you and your daughter and her schooling. They wish the high-quality in your little one and can paintings with you to make sure luck for her in each means.

If you are on a schedule regarding the pain meds you should be able to work out with the school a way of taking them while there such as visiting the nurse at the appropriate time etc

Also I'm wondering if there is anything else that sparks the headaches or something you could do to alleviate them suce as working too long (take scheduled breaks), working on the computer/reading (have a scribe or a program that reads for you)

If you can prove that these things are necessary for you to get the education you need then I'd say the school would possibly look at them but it may depend on state regs as to what they are allowed to put in place for you.

You could also get a 504 plan which would help your teachers know what things are needed to help you be successful in school. If you want an IEP it could take several weeks. One way to start the process is to have your legal guardian request that you be considered or screened for exceptional children's services at your school. Then a team would have to look at how your migraines effect your ability to learn. If it has an adverse effect then the team would look at what services could be provided to help you.
