Grade school IEP and Aspergers/ADHD?

My son is in the 2nd grade. He has aspergers. I have been trying to get the school to test him for an IEP. Unfortunately, my son is average to above average in his grades. Because of the Aspergers and the ADHD he is brillant when it comes to the academics, but he lacks in social skills. He has no friends, he is always getting into trouble, The school calls me once a week if not more to come pick him up because his behavior is out of control, he shows a lot of disrespect. He has a 504 but I feel like that isn't solving the problem. It is just making acommodations. I have talked to the school but they are not willing to give him an IEP because he is above normal academically. I really feel like my son can do so much more if he had an IEP. I don't know what else to do. We live in Las Vegas. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welllet's see I am looking at my son's IEP and it has a spot called "Eligibility Category" Autism is the top one. Your son has Aspergers which is a spectrum of Austism. Also at my son's meeting they told me that if he tests for Sensory integration, a specrum of Aspergers he would qualify for other services. Ok there is aslo one called "Emotional Disturbance" You might be able to get the ADHD squeezed under that. Social problems can also affect a child's learning. I live in NEvada too and every ADHD kid I know has an IEP highly intelligent children that are accidemically sound have an IEP because they are socially immature.

Take him to a doctor with sound solid proof from the doctor or an Occupational Therapist and then take copies to the school and tell em to put that in their pipe & smoke it. I don't know about Vegas, but here in Whitte Pine County we have what is called "Social Skills" it's a class that my son goes to. Also, this is weird of me, but does your son have a speech impediment of any sort? Email me & let me know because if he does I have another route that you can go to! Email me anyway You may get an eyefull of what I am about to have you do. It's all perfectly legal so don't worry.

I'm not sure in what state you live in...but I can tell you this... you need to fight the school system, not literally, but more like get on their back about gettin your child an IEP. If the school cannot get it, that means theres an agency most likely the county or city where you live in charge or providing the IEP. I cannot imagine how teachers can be attempting to teach your child without an IEP. He is also going to need evalutions from a series of people, a speech pathologist, an occupational therapist and together, there can be structurized goals made for your child. While the child may have aspergers, and as we may know its a variant to autism disorder, and together they are a part of larger diagnosis, he/she may present no interest in dong things that are expected. Such as writing, and going to the bathroom, tying their own shoes, putting their own jacket, etc. etc. and that is why thye may be using the term "lazy" so losely. Not to panic, it is why a behavior plan needs to be made and this also stems from the IEP, and every person involved in the school should be getting everything togehter to make the school transition an ease for you. Unfortunately, it is very difficult, which is why you need to call the school, go to the chool write letters, find out about the law, use it and do just about anything that is needed to make this work for your child. Good luck!

He can get the IEP based on his diagnoses without having any learning disabilities. You need to write a letter to the school district's special education office requesting an IEP evaluation. They will have 10 days to respond with a meeting date. I don't however think that an IEP would fix the problems with your son. Maybe you should consider finding a good psychologist who could help him learn to deal with his ADHD and Aspergers symptoms more...also they may have a psychiatrist who could give him some medicine to help him calm down. Risperdal has worked wonders for one of my sons. I have a son with ADHD and another with Bipolar so I know what you are going through. Hang in there.

I am in Texas and teach high school students with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism. All of my students qualify for an IEP even the student with very high IQs. We do write behavioral and social goals. Some of my students start out with me all day and slowly as they learn to self monitor move bake into the general education program with supports. I always help the GE teachers understand about Aspergers and what they perceive as "disrespect" is part of the nature of the disability. If he were getting support from Spec. Ed. by having a "safe place" to go when stressed by his environment they may see a decrease in these behaviors. I would suggest a book for you and your son to work together on called " Asperger's... What Does It Mean To Me?" by Catherine Faherty, as well as any other book or resource from www.FutureHorizons-autism.com. They are a great resource.

As I have a supportive school system that supports the work I do I spend more time convincing parents but this may help. I tell parents that the reason people with AU are not successful after education even PHDs is not because they are not smart but because of they do not know how to interact with others, this is a disability that must be addressed and worked on. Please feel free to email me with any other questions.

keep fighting for an IEP they wouldnt give me one but my parents kept fighting until we finally got one I was in the same situation. My grades were good (most of them I had very good grades in 1 or two subjects the rest except for one was average and one low grade (65).but since i was passing they didnt want to evaluate me. But after we kept fighting and pushing them they finally gave in. The problem is even with an IEP theyre arent much services that most public schools have that can help with Aspergers. But since ur son is young theyre are more oppurtunities than what I had/have. (im currently finishing up 12th grade and wasnt diagnosed with aspergers untill i was 14) There is occupational therapy which is sometimes a service given by the school. I know they can definately give counsling. Infact they can even sometimes give that with just a 504. But I got off the subject. I just reccomend keep pushing for it. Im not sure what the state laws are for Nevada but for New York every parent has the right to get there child evaluated for a IEP. I would look up some laws and try contacting organizations that advocate for childrens rights. They can help you fight to get your son evaluated.

I am a Special Education Teacher who has had many students with Aspergers. Even if he is high in academics he should qualify under OH (Other Health Impairment) or Autism because Aperger's is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. It is the law that they provide services for him. Once he has a working IEP you can request a one on one classroom aide to assist with his behavior issues. Keep pressing your school! Good luck!

DONT rely on the school. YOU go to the county where they can asses him and give you the IEP. YOU need to call the human resources folks for children in your area. MY 3 yr old is asd and is brilliant but he still got an IEP and all that ( because we had intervention VERY early, right after he turned 2 )

They say my sons Iq is probably off the chart but they still put him in a special pre school 4 days a week to help with his social skills.

SOME schools arent prepared to handle these children, its up TO you to get him where he needs to be , YOU have to be the champion mommy! GOOD LUCK
