adhesive for cultured stone?

I am to apply approx. 60 sq. ft of cultured stone on a new fireplace. The frame is 2X4, with 1/2 inch plywood. I do not want to use the standard mesh w/ mortar. I want to use some of the upper grade adhesives. (PL premium) I may be able to actually remove the panel, apply the stone w/ adhesive, let it dry, then lift w/ help and screw back into the 2X4 frame with coated screws. Anyone offer advice of this way of application??

Well, it went well. I left the plywood in place. The stone was easily set with liberal amounts of adhesive. I used 5 large tubes for the first fireplace, about 40 sq ft. I held the blocks in place with 2 1/2 inch screws, to wedge them and act as a support to keep them from slipping. Dried overnight and was very secure in the AM. Ready to start filling the gaps with mortar. My wife and I did the job in 5 hours. I'm sure that a professional would take 2-3 days to do this, at $300-400 a day. I am very happy with the ease and results.

Yep... Don t do it that way. The lifting and the flexing you ll get in lifting , if you could possibly lift it at all ,will break the bond on the mortar/ adhesive. If you don t want to do the wire mesh method with a scratch coat, there are adhesives that will bond the cultured stone to a cement board that can be added over your 1/2" plywood.
