What are your reasons for putting your child in soccer or other youth sports?

Mom's and dads, why are you having your child play soccer? Is it for fitness, fun, to compete...? What are the main concerns and goals you have as your son or daughter starts youth sports?

My middle child plays soccer and adores it, he's looking very forward to Spring season coming up!!! First and foremost we play for fun because he truly loves it, then of course the other benefits, discipline, learning team effort and working together for a common goal, exercise, healthy competition, and sportsmanship (which our league stresses). We are hoping our next one wants to play as soon as he's old enough, but its something we would never push, we want them to choose an activity that THEY enjoy and therefore benefit from :)

My son is only 6, and wants to play sports w/other kids. He has tried soccer and basketball. He has a great time. I don't worry about the competition part...I want him to have fun and run around w/kids his age. it also helps him learn how to be part of a team/group, take turns, and lose gracefully. And winning makes him feel good too. So for us, it's a combinaion of things, but not too intense like some families take it.

He's not in soccer, but goes to swimming and karate...my main goal is for him, at this point, is for fun. He's an active kid so fitness isn't much of a concern at this point, but as he gets older, it would be nice if there was an activity that he enjoyed doing that kept him moving.

My main concern is for myself...dealing with the obnoxious parents at lessons who think they are coaching their 3 year old to be the next Michael Phelps...it makes me crazy.

I dont think it's really that suck when i watch the show of American soccer team in WC 2010. American team can not compare to the champion. Right now, that team has no chance to win the championship (even if they defeat Ghana to have a chance to play in the next match). But after all, they have the good games. Althought, soccer has never been emphasized more than baseball, basketball, rugby, in the world wide look, American soccer is average.

My 11 yr old daughter is in a dance troupe that go around the island that we live in the carnivals.
She goes about 5 hours a week at the moment as the carnival season is nearly here.
We put her in this as she asked about it after seeing all the girls in the carnivals.
I also think it is very good for her health to keep fit.
Also it helps her to be in a team with others and to help the younger children.
