Can I keep cut flowers in the refrigerator?

I just picked up a bouquet of flowers for my wife but then learned that she won't be home until tomorrow. Can I just leave them on the table, or should I stick them in the fridge?

Bonus question: I don't think there is a vase, they are just in a cardboard box with newspaper around it, but it feels like something heavy at the bottom. Should I leave it like that, or can I just unwrap the newspaper and stick them in a vase? Thanks!

Too keep them looking as nice as possible until she gets home you should cut about half an inch off the bottom of each stalk, put them in a vase with water and add any pounder packet that may be included in the package. Once they are in the vase with water keep them in the fridge until she gets home or you are ready for people to see them.

Add a teaspoon of household bleach to a vase of water. Make sure the water is slightly warm. Add a teaspoon of sugar and a dash of vinegar. Trim the ends off the stems and put the flowers in the vase. Keep in a cool, dark place. Don't refrigerate the flowers as a household refrigerator is too dry for flowers. Change the water daily (also adding bleach, sugar and vinegar). The bleach is to kill any bacteria in the water, the sugar is to feed the flowers and the vinegar is to make the water more acidic to suit the flowers needs. Use warm water, not cold as there are less air bubbles in hot water. Air bubbles in the water can cause blockages in the flowers' stem and prevent them from taking up the water properly. Have fun!

Flowers keep best when cut with a sharp knife - don't use a serrated knife - and immediately put into water. Always cut on a slant, as it exposes more stem area. Remove leaves that will be under water. Do not remove thorns from roses as it shortens their life.

If you don't get a packet with your flowers; add 3tblspns sugar 1/2 cup white vinegar to the water.
