What's the role of a mother in our society?

I'm just getting a little survey-type thing going for a group discussion I'll be having in a few weeks. The topic is on parenting and specifically the way our society views the roles of mothers.

I'd like to hear from you- what do you think a role of a mother includes? It could be elaborate or short...whatever you want to put. It could also be your personal feelings or what you think our society as a whole believes.

Thought I might get more answers here than in surveys. Thanks :)

Okay I lied. I guess I don't want a really short statement like "taking care of her children" because that means different things to people. Some people would say working outside the home to provide money for the family is taking care of their children, as another would say staying home means taking care of their children. So try not to make a statement that could mean different things....Maybe that's asking too much lol!

The role of a mother is the role of any parent, be there for your child no matter what, they are always the first priority, and do whats best by them, even if its hard for everyone.

I personally think that my role as a mother is to physically and mentally take care of my daughter. By physically I mean feeding, bathing, making sure she's in clean clothes, has her teeth brushed, that sort of stuff. By mentally I mean being here for her in every way and loving her as much as I possibly can.

I think the overall idea of the role of a mother according to society is close to what I described, but then everyone is different and views things differently. Some mothers have children or a child and think nothing of it. They continue on with their care free lives and let other people do all the work in raising their children. Then there are some that couldn't imagine letting anyone else raise their children but them.

I view motherhood as THE MOST IMPORTANT role ANYONE could EVER have. As a biological, adopted and foster Mom to 13 (so far), I wouldn't trade being a mother for EVERYTHING in the world!!!!! As a mother, we teach all of the basics in life like manners and how to do things. More importantly, we shape who our children will be in the future and in turn our children shape our future. What mothers do and teach their children has a DIRECT impact on society. There is a song that I LOVE that explains HOW IMPORTANT motherhood is, not only to the child but to the world.

MOTHER OF ALL LIVING
Who will build their own television phone?
Somebodies baby!
Build a flying car or take a walk on Mars?
Somebodies baby!
Look at all the strides we've made, one thing hasn't changed
Every forward step, a Mother has had her hand in it.

Who will be the Queen, President or King?
Somebodies baby!
Who will relieve the poor or discover cancer's cure?
Somebodies baby!
A child upon its Mothers knee, has found the noblest thrown
And Daddy makes a living, so the Mother of all living,
Can shape their souls and raise them whole.
She has come to know She's the Mother of All Living.

Who will make hunger cease or lead the world to peace?
Somebodies baby!
Who'll keep finding ways to help the human race?
Mommas and babies!
Hands that hold a child today, turns tomorrows world
And Daddy makes a living, so the Mother of All Living
Can shape their souls and raise them whole.
She has come to know, She's the Mother of All Living.

Her touch extends beyond what she can see.
Even to the air we breath, the earth and seas
Every living thing!!!
She gathers in her Little Ones and points them to the stars.
And Daddy makes a living, so the Mother of All Living
Can shape their souls and raise them whole.
She has come to know She's the Mother of All Living
Shape our souls and raise us whole.
We have come to know, You are the Mother of All Living

Aside from the obvious biological imperative of carrying the child for nine months and giving birth, there is no such thing as a mother's role and a father's role. There is only the role of a parent, which is to always put the child's well being first when making decisions, to love the child unconditionally, and to prepare the child for the rest of his/her life to the best of their ability.

The role of a mother is to take care of her children. It's as simple as that!
