How do you get your mother in law to accept you?

I have a wonderful husband of 37 years, but my mother in law has never wanted me to be friends or anything. Sometimes it hurts, there is not one picture of me in her home. She is sick now and we've been helping around the house but it seems as if she resents me being there. What can I do?
