How do I become a furniture designer?

Is there a specific degree I require? A school you recommend? A company that accepts amateurs and their designs? Any advice at all?

The job of a furniture designer is to create a stylish and practical product for public consumption. Office chairs, couches and other furniture items need to appeal positively to the senses of sight and touch. You can help thousands of people become more comfortable when you start a career as a furniture designer.
1. Learn to express yourself as a designer through two-dimensional and three-dimensional design courses in college. Your future career as a furniture designer hinges on your ability to depict your vision accurately in sketches and models.
2. Build your knowledge of furniture design, physics and math with an engineering degree at the university level. A Bachelor's of Science degree in engineering will give you insight into weight distribution, proper construction and other skills necessary to complete future projects.
3. Purchase model paints, basswood and other materials early in your career to construct a home-modeling workshop. You need to be able to build scaled-down versions of your furniture projects for potential clients from the comfort of your home.
4. Write down information on upholstering techniques and materials in a notebook as a central resource throughout your career. You can scribble notes as you speak with instructors, fellow furniture designers and upholstery experts for later use.
5.Sketch your ideas for a new couch or drawing table as soon as it comes in your mind to build an extensive collection of drawings. You should keep pencils and sketch pads around your home to help you transfer ideas onto paper anytime.
6.Inquire about freelance and temporary positions with furniture repair shops in your community. You can see design problems and issues with the longevity of furniture on a daily basis by helping recondition antique furniture.
7.Lay out your portfolio of sketches and past projects for interested clients with a sleek online presentation. You can scan your sketches, use computer design programs and place everything in a brief presentation before job interviews.
8.Design a clean and stylish website to open your designs to a wider audience as you become a professional designer. Your website should feature testimonials from past clients as well as a representative group of your sketches to draw in business from around the world.

All you need is be able to design. Make a portfolio of your best designs (physical copy and one that can be emailed) And well get out there. As for collage courses you'd want to do product design (not really necessary) And my experience with product design was entering competitions on DesignBoom.
