Lybian war - why Western involvement?

I understand that there was a Libian civil war, and I"m trying to understand a couple of things.

1) reason for the war in the first place. I suspect that the reasons are similar to the reasons for many of the protests in arab states in recent times.

2) the justification for Western (US/UN/FR/UK etc.) involvement? I can't see a clear reason why the West got involved?

If the reason is because of atrocities committed against the people of Libya, then why aren't the same powers also now invading Syria?

Lockerbie. the lying muslim bomber is still alive. He cried that he was dying in prison with cancer. Turns out HE is a cancer. Qaddafi thinks he got away with murder.
